Our Group: The Chief Data Officer of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Jeff Leek, established the Fred Hutch Data Science Lab (DaSL) to develop and support the overall data strategy for the organization. The mission of DaSL is to lead the FHCC toward its strategic data goals through: building an institution-wide data community, bolstering data science expertise, and fostering a robust and coordinated clinical and research data ecosystem. We do this via collaborating with the community on training and documentation, building and evaluating data-oriented support resources, facilitating partnerships and philanthropy, and engaging in data infrastructure projects that span from the clinic to the lab bench. We rely heavily on written communication and continuous collaboration in order to support our hybrid team, as well as make our work as accessible as scalably and sustainably as possible by FHCC staff. Position Purpose: This position serves to coordinate data science projects in DaSL from those related to clinical data at FHCC to a diverse array of research related data endeavors. A large, program-scale effort will involve this person coordinating collaborative meetings with relevant stakeholder groups wanting to leverage clinical data, coordinating the technical projects related to the development of new FHCC clinical data assets and tools, and ensuring coordination between the various related groups engaged in this work including Information Technology, Compliance and the Office of Translational Research among others. Beyond this, smaller, more targeted data science, data management and research strategy related projects in the DaSL portfolio will need ongoing project management support. Building processes and procedures within DaSL related to project management to foster collaboration, communication and effective execution of data science projects as the group grows will be a critical contribution. This position in based in Seattle and is considered a hybrid position. The flexibility of on-campus scheduling will be dependent on balancing engagement with current staff and the collaborative requirements of the position with remote work. Position Complexities: This position requires excellent communication and collaboration skills and an interest in cross-discipline collaborative work with clinicians, translational researchers, data scientists, analytics team members (clinical, finance, research, etc), data engineers and data governance and policy staff. A successful candidate will be heavily invested in helping drive high value projects supporting an overall vision of a coordinated clinical and research data ecosystem at FHCC. Given DaSL’s focus on openness, communication and usability, this position will require preparing documentation and external facing communications to contextualize our projects for potential users/beneficiaries at FHCC.
Responsibilities Core Responsibilities: Planning and Coordination of Data Science Lab Collaborative Projects and Services: Collaborate with DaSL staff and other groups at FHCC on development of project plans including scope, timelines, skill levels, responsibilities and resources. Facilitate the resolution of complex problems, by meeting with stakeholders, partners, and technical staff to identify problems and potential solutions. Work with other Project/Program Managers to align projects and schedules across multi-disciplinary teams. Lead meetings of stakeholders including maintaining meeting agendas, recording decisions and challenges, and keeping meetings with regular cadences on task and focused. Contributes to user facing documentation and guidance to ensure wide adoption of project results. Coordinate emerging DaSL development projects with external corporate partners as the DaSL program grows. Develop Processes and Procedures to Facilitate DaSL Support for Services: Create processes for initiation of cross-departmental collaborations, pilots and larger projects with DaSL. Create and implement procedures for ongoing support of projects, tools, and applications developed by DaSL or in collaboration with Information Technology when adopted by the research community. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: 4+ years technical project management experience. Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
Ability to effectively communicate asynchronously with collaborators and DaSL staff using Slack, Teams, and other software supporting documentation and sharing used in the group. Experience with project management in a data science, research, or technology related field. Ability to prioritize written documentation and communication with attention to multiple audiences and creating broad understanding across groups. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with audiences with a wide range of data expertise. Ability to be flexible and adapt to change, to work independently, part of a multi-disciplinary group with DaSL staff as well as external partners. Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to keep projects of varied sizes on track with aggressive timelines. Desired Skills and Expertise: Bachelor’s degree preferred. PMO or equivalent certification desired. Candidates with cloud based technology expertise, bioinformatics, data analysis or data engineering backgrounds will have the opportunity to be involved in projects directly when their expertise is relevant if desired. Prior experience with data science, software development or data engineering training or mentoring would be valuable as this role could contribute to DaSL’s training portfolio as needs are identified during projects.
Experience with clinical or research data systems or biomedical research software development would be ideal. The annual base salary range for this position is from $101,359 to $160,213 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.
