Dallas, Texas, Texas, This position is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), Ambulance Service, for the North Texas VA Health Care System (VANTHCS), with an emergency room, acute care or urgent care clinic, or other similar departments performing basic life support procedures. A recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized for a highly qualified individual. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/27/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of diagnostic signs, e. g. , pulse, respiration, blood pressure, temperature, skin color, pupils of the eyes, state of consciousness, ability to move on command, reaction to pain, etc. , to perform patient examination, provide patient care, and ensure appropriate patient handling; Knowledge and skill in emergency medicine techniques to determine, based on the diagnosis of the patient, the approach that will most effectively sustain the patient’s life; Knowledge of protocols and treatments used in the delivery of emergency care for persons injured in chemical, nuclear, biological, and hazardous materials incidents; Skill in emergency communication techniques and the operation of communications equipment, to accurately obtain and relay information to and from dispatchers and health care providers; Knowledge and skill to assist patients in taking emergency medications for certain complaints; e. g. , Nitroglycerin tablets for chest pain, Epinephrine auto-injections for allergic reactions, or Albuterol inhalers for asthma patients, under the direction of standing orders or of a physician. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. Physical Requirements: EMT conducts patient assessments, assesses severity of illness/injury and identifies life threatening problems. EMTs shall perform patient triage, take and record patients vital signs. They will perform physical exams on patients. EMT’s will perform Basic Life Support measures on patients, according to established protocols. EMT’s will operate or utilize various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies which may include ambulance, extrication tools, blood pressure cuff, AED, glucose monitor, oxygen terminal, radio communication, medical supplies and other various patient monitoring items. EMT’s will be involved in patient transport and will be required to lift heavy objects such as a stretcher loaded with a patient. Administers basic life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing CPR, and/or drug treatments. Operates or utilizes various emergency medical equipment, tools and supplies which may include ambulance, extrication tools, blood pressure cuff, AED, glucose monitor, oxygen terminal, pulse oximetry, cardiac monitor, medical supplies, radio communications equipment, stretchers, wheelchairs, stairchars, and general office equipment. Provides assessment & treatment as prescribed in protocol within prescribed limits in the out of hospital & hospital setting. Provides a thorough safety inspection and operator maintenance (e. g. , monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure, etc. ). Safely operates one or more emergency motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight of up to 10,000 pounds.

Vehicles are driven through all types of weather & traffic, operating primarily in the metropolitan area and occasional long-distance trips. Conducts patient assessments, assesses severity of illness/injury and identifies life threatening problems. Performs invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and nonlife-threatening condition. Operates the vehicle under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions to provide emergency and patient transportation. Performs 12 lead EKGs accurately and correctly applies EKG monitoring equipment and oxygen monitoring equipment, following competency approval and under the direction of the RN or Physician.
