About the Role: Job Summary The Lead Sterile Processing Technician works under the direct supervision of the SPD Supervisor. Must be able to work cooperatively with other members of the Surgical and Sterile Processing Team. He or she has shift responsibility of overseeing care, maintenance and processing of all instrumentation, containers, and equipment. He or she demonstrates a sense of professionalism and ethical standards. He or she is able to complete tasks as assigned and uses the appropriate resources and references available for processing instrumentation and equipment. He or she is responsible for overseeing the delivery of accurate and complete instrument trays to the operating room, and other departments within the hospital system. Using attained knowledge of sterilization processes, the Lead Sterile Processing Technician will work independently in an ever-changing technical environment. Ability to perform duties associated with processing of sterile instruments to include decontamination, assembly, autoclaving, and dispatch. The Lead Sterile Processing Technician participates in all unit quality control activities.
He or she must demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of their role to patient care. They are responsible for helping to maintain a safe environment for fellow team members as well as patients. Minimum Job Qualifications Licensure or other certifications: Required: National certification in Sterile Processing (IAHCSMM or CBSPD) or Surgical Technologist Certification. If a Certified Surgical Technologist, national certification in Sterile Processing must be obtained within one (1) year of hire. Educational Requirements: High School Diploma or GED. Minimum Experience: Two (2) to three (3) years experience in Sterile Processing. Other: Preferred Job Qualifications Preferred Licensure or other certifications: Preferred Educational Requirements: Preferred Experience: Three (3) to five (5 ) years experience in Sterile Processing. Other: Job Specific and Unique Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Precise Hand Eye Coordination Manual Dexterity Skills Has appropriate knowledge of instruments and their assembly (laparoscopy) Knows priority instruments and equipment and processes these accordingly Has proper knowledge of all implant trays Knowledge of proper inspection of filter, seals, and placement of container Understands the principles of sterilization and the importance of the sterilization process by demonstrating the correct procedure to load and operate all sterilizers, to ensure product sterility Essential Tasks and Responsibilities Understands and has the ability to perform all essential tasks and responsibilities of Sterile Processing Tech I and II. Regularly accepts and completes most complex assignments. Ability to anticipate instrument needs based on the surgical schedule.
Ability to flex staff assignments to meet the needs of the patients in the O. R. Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff. Assists with orientation and every day workflow of assignments of new employees. Assists with development of in-services for staff members. Coordinates daily workflow with staff members to ensure timely completion. Monitor workflow performed by staff to ensure correctness. Assists with ensuring staff are following guidelines and assignments of tasks are completed timely and accurately. Ensures implementation of standards within the quality assurance monitoring process and improvements are followed. Maintains and reviews missing instrumentation.
Puts in requests for missing instrument orders and instrument par needed to maintain functioning instruments trays. Engages regularly in formal and informal dialogue about quality; directly addresses quality issues promptly. Looks beyond issues to uncover underlying causes of problems and identifies ways to resolve them. Proactively identifies new ideas/opportunities from multiple sources or methods to improve processes beyond conventional approaches. Views difficult situations as opportunities for improvement and actively embraces change instead of emphasizing the negative. Serves as SPD liaison to the OR; actively collaborates with the OR coordinators to provide the best service. Upholds open, non-defensive communication in stressful situations. Able to train and educate by setting the example (giving technical instruction, providing leadership). Ability to function as the leader on the floor without requiring support or instruction from others. Assists in the supervision, coaching, mentoring, leading and training of department personnel.
