The Fred Hutch Cancer Center IT team is looking for an Associate Vice President, Research IT and Scientific Computing to drive business engagement and strategic projects in support of our mission: Providing IT & data services to accelerate the elimination of disease. The successful candidate is a senior technology leader who has a record of accomplishment in building close relationships with a diverse set of scientists, researchers, and business stakeholders, advising researchers during the grant writing process, leading enterprise-grade research facing applications, and executing complex technology projects. You are a strategic leader who understands the modern technology environment and has built organizations around excellence. The Associate Vice President, Research IT and Scientific Computing is the leader of the Research IT and Scientific Computing team, accountable for all activities related to Fred Hutch’s research technology environment including building strategic plans, leading managers of high-performance computing, shared services instrumentation, business relationship management, and applications support teams. You enjoy working with partners to solve complex business problems across diverse scientific divisions and an array of external partners. This is a highly collaborative role, that works closely with Research leaders, the Chief Information Officer, and peers to ensure that technology solutions are technically and financially viable and designed to meet the needs of the business. The Associate Vice President, Research IT and Scientific Computing reports to the Chief Information Officer and is a member of the senior IT leadership team. Responsibilities Ensure the success of Scientific Computing initiatives, by providing leadership and vision for Research IT and Scientific Computing for the Fred Hutch Cancer Center.
Drive the development of high-performance computing infrastructure and solutions, data storage and management solutions, and data science capabilities through strategic partnering and robust engineering, thereby reinforcing Fred Hutch as a center of excellence in biomedical data science. Serve as executive sponsor for research and science projects, providing oversight and ensuring the projects meets business needs, objectives, and Support faculty needs and requirements by way of partnership, evangelism, and as a trusted advisor. Lead and co-chair the Scientific Computing oversight committee. Make decisions in partnership with manager for annual budget requests, opex, capex, and resource planning. Inspire, lead, coach, develop, mentor, and manage performance across a diverse team with deep technical and professional Build a “community of practice” specific to scientific computing which enhances our capabilities. Build and maintain a strong team and partnerships across the Hutch and Partner with Research leadership and Faculty to support the technology needs for effective grant writing. Partner with Information Security to ensure IT systems, procedures, and services follow Information Security policies. Partner with Architecture and Engineering team to build and maintain technology roadmaps that meet the Hutch’s strategic Participate in monthly and quarterly business reviews including preparing and presenting department and application KPI’s Engage in continuous learning and stay apprised of latest technology trends to ensure Fred Hutch’s IT processes are modernized and cutting edge to support the business of science and Responsible for recruiting, hiring, all aspects of performance management, coaching, mentoring team members, providing candid and timely feedback, and employee development Manage 5-7 direct reports, approximately 35-40 professional IT staff Qualifications BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field desired, or equivalent work experience. Graduate degree in Business and/or Information Systems a plus. Candidate must have experience managing High Performance Computing systems in an academic, research or healthcare environment and experience working as a trusted partner with faculty researchers.
10+ years technical leadership experience (hardware, software, and best practices) 10+ years of building and leading high performing teams, with a culture of accountability, learning, coaching, mentoring, and career growth. Experience collaborating and/or leading the technical components of research grants Strong understanding and demonstrated leadership of technology operations and operational excellence best practices including tickets and ticket management systems, systems monitoring, infrastructure management, KPIs and metrics. Exceptional leadership, analytical, communication, and problem-solving across a broad range of stakeholders Experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise applications utilizing SDLC, Agile, DevOps, ITIL frameworks and lean principles in on-prem, cloud-based, and hybrid environments Demonstrated experience with leading and managing change across a broad set of stakeholders Demonstrated leadership abilities in a team environment with a proven record of positive contributions and success related to enterprise-wide goals Proven strategic planning, budgeting, and execution excellence Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine requirement, with exceptions only for approved medical or religious accommodations. The annual base salary range for this position is from $184,963 to $308,271 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for a sign on bonus. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.
