Job Summary
Academic Advisor I/II – College Based
The Academic Advisor I/II will ensure and support student success through academic advising and assist the college with other student recruitment and retention activities.
Pre-Matriculation and Special Populations – Academic Advisor II
The Pre-Matriculation & Special Populations Advisor II position is not assigned to a college but serves pre-matriculated undergraduate students and other special undergraduate populations. This position will be housed in the Department of Academic Success in the Academic Advising department.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
Academic Advisor I/II – College Based
- Advise students individually and in groups to include prospective students, transfer students, freshman, sophomore, juniors, and seniors seeking an undergraduate degree offered by the respective college.
- Participate in and aid coordination of college activities with Director, Department Chairs, Associate Dean, Dean, and other areas and individuals on campus.
- Aid in organization and implementation of recruitment and retention functions for the college.
- Work with students on probation, suspension, and financial aid students that have signed timely graduation contracts.
- Update and maintain undergraduate student electronic data files.
- Utilize software to keep accurate counts on students in the college. Use this information to complete semester reports.
- Generate semester reports related to enrollment numbers, retention numbers, and other student related matters. (Academic Advisor II only)
- Implement retention plans. (Academic Advisor II only)
Pre-Matriculation and Special Populations – Academic Advisor II
- Review credentials and provide draft schedules for pre-matriculated students who have confirmed their admission and are TSI complete. These draft schedules will be communicated to the students via Admissions representatives.
- Track and review CAP student materials to ensure students are in the appropriate courses as noted by the UT Tyler plan and requirements from UT Austin.
- Serve as a secondary review of credentials for undergraduate students slated to graduate in a three-semester range.
- Support the acquisition of academic degree program retention and persistence data.
- Attend advising events at local community colleges.
Minimum Required Education/Experience
Academic Advisor I – College Based
- Bachelor’s degree.
- One year of experience in academic advising or related field.
Academic Advisor II
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Two years of experience in academic advising or related field.
Pre-Matriculation and Special Populations Advisor II
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
- Three years of experience in academic advising or related field preferred.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Successfully demonstrated skills in communication and advising students.
- Able to communicate information pertaining to university academic policies to students in a relatable manner.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using standard computer software and databases including Microsoft Office, Teams, and student records systems (Peoplesoft, Banner, EAB products, etc).
Other Information
- May require some travel to development workshops.
- Will require occasional availability after hours and on weekends during advising periods, orientation, and previews.

Additional Information
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
