Departmental Overview

The Undergraduate Research Programs Manager will support the academic achievements of students in the Haas Scholars Program and the Underrepresented Researchers of Color organization by providing individualized, advising services to low income, first generation, minoritized and systems-impacted students at Cal. Services include but are not limited to assessing academic needs, developing individual study plans, addressing academic and non-academic barriers to success, and supporting the development of academic skills (research skills, managing research budgets, preparation for graduate programs).

The Undergraduate Research Program Manager will develop and administer programs that provide holistic counseling aimed at increasing the academic success of underserved student populations within and beyond the College of Letters & Sciences. This will include: 1) management of the Haas Scholars Program; 2) supervision of the Underrepresented Researchers of Color (UROC) organization; and 3) curation of the L&S Research Collaboratory to include and amplify the work of diversity pipeline programs and research programs across campus. The incumbent will develop partnerships with colleagues, including other academic achievement counselors, who serve similar demographics.

Primarily responsible for the continued success of the Haas Scholars Program, the incumbent will annually mentor and coach a multidisciplinary cohort of twenty high-achieving, low-income students who are admitted as Haas Scholars, ensuring their success in designing, executing and presenting their independent research projects. In addition to advising, the Haas Scholars Program Manager will design and implement both educational enrichment activities and community-building events to enhance student learning and satisfaction, including a reception to welcome new scholars, a retreat to prepare them for intensive summer research, and a conference to showcase their accomplishments. While executing the annual program cycle for the established cohort, the incumbent will work simultaneously to identify and recruit qualified students for the next cohort and shepherd these students through the application process. The position therefore entails counterbalancing expert program administration with personal and cohort-based advising strategies.

Extending from advising expertise in promoting educational equity, the Undergraduate Research Program Manager will also oversee and advise the student organizers of the Underrepresented Researchers of Color (UROC). Through an array of peer mentoring services and workshops, UROC serves as a pipeline to increase the representation of marginalized students in research programs and graduate schools, and seeks to build a community of researchers of color at Cal. As the staff supervisor of UROC, the incumbent will oversee the hiring and onboarding of undergraduate and graduate student coordinators, oversee the refinement of their mentoring toolkit, support their application for external grants and intramural funding opportunities.

Working closely with the director of OURS and other campus stakeholders, the incumbent will be also responsible for curating the L&S Research Collaboratory. Drawing on expertise advising students in the Haas Scholars Program and data from surveys of faculty mentors and student participants in other OURS programs, the

Undergraduate Research Program Manager will leverage advanced knowledge of emerging research trends to develop a workshop series that will expand undergraduate exposure to general and domain-specific research skills and outputs. The L&S Research Collaboratory will leverage faculty and graduate student expertise, mitigate divisional siloes through strategic partnerships, and promote connections to other research programs on campus. By encouraging critical inter- and multi-disciplinary discourse around established, evolving, and emerging research praxis across the full disciplinary range of the College of Letters and Sciences, the L&S Research Collaboratory also seeks to create a more integrated research community and make more visible the productive intersection of teaching and research that is already happening across campus. Affirming the value of a broad-based liberal arts education, this mission-focused work will also feed into important curricular initiatives, particularly ones that serve historically marginalized students. The incumbent will therefore develop the L&S Research Collaboratory to align with divisional goals to improve student wayfinding, belonging, and scholarly self-actualization.
