Position Summary:
Join our team as an Academic Advisor and play a
vital role in supporting student success. You will provide personalized guidance and advising to students across various degree areas,
helping them navigate academic choices and build degree plans aligned with their goals. Monitoring student progress and offering proactive
support will be crucial in fostering their academic success. As an advocate for students, you will connect them with campus resources and
ensure compliance with university requirements. Strong communication skills, a passion for student development, and the ability to thrive in
a complex organizational structure are essential for this position.
Duties:
CASELOAD MANAGEMENT Use KPC’s
student success technology, EAB Navigate, to manage academic advising caseload and monitor student progress. Report all academic advising
sessions as directed. Monitor and manage student cases and alerts. Initiate and manage advising appointment and enrollment campaigns as
directed. Ensure accuracy of advisor assignments in Banner for assigned students.Essential
STUDENT SUPPORT Provide customized,
hospitable outreach and support to newly admitted and returning students. Build relationships with advisees to connect them to campus
resources and facilitate their development and success with a commitment to students as whole beings. Serve as an advocate and liaison for
students to internal offices including faculty, Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, Career Services, and other student support services.
Respond to student questions promptly and comprehensively. Work with prospective students interested in KPC academic programs to determine
which program will best meet personal goals. Provide general information to prospective and new students about all aspects of student
services at KPC including admission, registration, financial aid, housing, support services, testing, etc. Provide appropriate departmental
and faculty referrals. Provide advising and outreach for students who are enrolled in developmental courses. Contact could include phone
calls, text messages, emails, letters, social media campaigns, class visits, and group training for these students. Provide monthly
follow-up services to reach out to new and continuing students in developmental classes. Facilitate academic progress checks as scheduled
with feedback and recommendations to the student, the KPC Director of Academic Advising, and the Director of Student Services. Coordinate
outreach with the Learning Center, Math Lab, Writing Lab, Library Services, and faculty members. Assist students from AK Native backgrounds
with navigating the gaps between Western educational paradigms and indigenous systems. In addition, provide resource referral for Alaska
Native scholarships and opportunities. Engage resident students in cultural activities common to rural Alaska villages, both on- and off-
campus. This may be coordinating a monthly or bi-monthly potluck or berry-picking or creating partnerships with local Native resources.
Plans activities that support a cross-cultural sense of belonging.Essential
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES Actively participate in assigned
committees and/or councils. Engage in professional development activities such as workshops, division, and department training sessions.
Host and/or participate in on and off campus student outreach and orientation events as directed. Maintain proficiency in all assigned
university data management and student support systems. Serve as a back-up to related positions and cross train with peer positions to
ensure proper office coverage during absences. Occasionally attend and/or assist with virtual and in-person events (i.e., orientation,
workshops, recruitment fairs, college open houses, etc.) that may take place outside of normal office hours. Provide in-person office
coverage as needed. Participate in the hiring and training process for student workers within the advising department. Monitor student
worker hours and performance, and maintain academic advising desk as the front-line point of contact for students. Fill in at the front desk
as needed. Train, work and collaborate with KPC advising colleagues at both KBC and KRC campuses.Essential
ACADEMIC ADVISING Provide
individual and/or group advising across multiple degree areas as assigned, helping students explore academic choices and degree planning in
accordance with their educational and professional goals. Build degree pathways that follow academic and university requirements,
demonstrate how and when students will reach academic goals; use advising holds/PIN system to ensure mandatory academic advising as
directed. Identify students for alternative general education placement measures by reviewing test scores, prior courses, and other
applicable student information. Monitor student progress toward degree completion and take appropriate action to promote student success
including persistent, proactive communication with at-risk students. Encourage students to persist in their academic goals by addressing
problems and obstacles responsibly, connecting them to appropriate campus services as needed. Educate and guide students in initiating
academic and logistical actions based on university deadlines, policies and procedures (e.g., course registration, add/drop actions,
completion of financial aid materials and appeals, addressing account holds, purchasing books) through multiple modalities including phone,
virtual, and in-person meetings. Processes, reviews, and evaluates documents such as change of major forms, academic petitions, transcripts,
and financial aid appeals. Provide on-campus DSS services and technical assistance to students, staff and faculty. Process student requests
for accommodations in accordance with applicable disability law and university policy. Coordinate local services with UA DSS offices. Seek
opportunities to promote awareness of people with disabilities and contribute to a campus climate of diversity and acceptance. Maintain DSS
records and data in accordance with applicable privacy laws. Conduct and/or coordinate workshops on applying for financial aid, campus
programs, and college success techniques to increase student readiness and persistence. Interact with faculty advisors regarding students,
curriculum, degree information, academic information and deadlines. Aid students’ transition to faculty advisor(s). Comply with all federal
FERPA regulations and confidentiality procedures and institutional policies applicable to testing and placement data management. Protect the
security of student information and records as required, including paper and electronic media. Follow established University protocols and
use assigned tools and systems, maintain ongoing communication with assigned students, and support UAA goals for student retention, academic
success, and graduation.Essential
Passion for higher education and student
success. Strong knowledge of University programs, policies and procedures, and campus support services. Demonstrated experience in working
with individuals from diverse academic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, including
active listening skills and a willingness to initiate dialogue. Strong oral and written communication skills. Sound professional judgment
and discretion, capacity to maintain the strictest of confidentiality.
Excellent computer skills with various software programs to
include databases, spreadsheets, and word processing programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint preferred). Experience with the
Banner data warehouse, or ability to train within one month of hire.
Ability to work independently and as an influential part of a team
in a fast-paced environment and complex organizational structure.
Ability to work under administrative supervision, keeping supervisor
informed of progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, human services, college development, education, or other closely related
discipline.
General training in college student adjustment experiences and factors
Knowledge of best practices, federal laws and legal
issues associated with and applicable to student services and higher education.
Knowledge of AK Tribal and AK Native Corporations and
Scholarships
Experience working as a team.
Experience building rapport with students, staff, faculty and the general
public.
Experience applying best practices regarding university policies and procedures, and federal laws and legal issues as they relate
to students, applying university knowledge to refer students to appropriate areas for assistance.
Experience planning, organizing and
implementing effective and functional academic advising. Experience with UA Admission procedures;
Experience with UA computer systems
(UAOnline, Banner, DegreeWorks, EAB).
Familiarity with Accuplacer and ALEKS placement tests.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree and one year relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Advising experience and knowledge of student and enrollment services.
This is a 12-month,
non-exempt, term staff position that is scheduled for 40 hours per week from August-May, and 20 hours per week in June-July. It comes with
both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed
on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 78
starting at $24.74, based on education and experience.
