Department Summary
The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT WISE and a number of professional development and clinical training programs that allow us to invest substantially in the instruction of all students and to facilitate careers to address a global society.
HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve, with thoughtful, inclusive, and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners, and more.
Position Overview
This position is responsible for functioning as a team/project lead for advising Master’s degree students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling for HPS; implementing advising initiatives and protocols for targeted populations; coordinating retention programs that focus on master’s student academic success; managing and analyzing master’s student academic information data and preparing reports; and making presentations to internal and external groups.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong presentation, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Advanced academic advising expertise.
- Ability to integrate and analyze information and develop reports.
- Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.
- Ability to effectively manage projects and work teams.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing with internal and external groups in a variety of settings.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree and experience in graduate student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; some weekend work required as needed.
Driving University Vehicle: No

Job Duties
Demonstrates commitment to supporting equity and inclusion for all in the academic community.
Advises Master’s degree students regarding University requirements and individual program requirements in a timely and professional manner.
Develops and provides assessments of retention initiatives, and presents data to both internal and external stakeholders.
Prepares accurate degree audit templates/guides for each program major, and interfaces with the Toulouse Graduate School.
Works with graduate school staff to process master’s degree applications; contacts graduate students to follow-up on non-payment spreadsheets.
Works closely with departments on curriculum changes, presents impact reports to departments related to proposed changes, and helps track students during curriculum transitions as needed.
Counsels students on matters of students/faculty relations, student behavior, student academic work, and other University policies and procedures.
Works closely with Academic Associate Dean to support internal graduate recruitment through development of strategic recruitment plan/campaign for graduate degree programs.
