ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Department of Physics is committed to the generation and
dissemination of new scientific knowledge involving physical principles and their applications to related interdisciplinary fields. The
faculty and students in the Department of Physics are cooperatively contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge at the frontiers
of human understanding in the sciences in general and physics in particular. This process essentially intertwines the initial development of
scientific methodology in classroom and laboratory instruction activities within the Department, the search for new knowledge in research
laboratories in the Department of Physics and affiliations outside, and dissemination through professional channels and in the classroom. In
addition to scientific advancement, the ultimate objective is the preparation of future scientists with knowledge of historical perspectives
of current physical principles, and their applications at the forefront of science and technology.
POSITION
SUMMARY:
This position provides general office and program support for the Physics Department. This position performs a
variety of administrative functions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Services:
- Assist students with
university policies & procedures; keep track of deadlines, assist Directors of Physics Graduate Programs and Physics Graduate
Admissions - Coordinate graduate admissions with Registrar, the College, and the Office of Graduate Studies, Collect student
information, Act as Liaison with Graduate School, adhering to policies & procedures - Correspond with students regarding all academic
matters, Maintain current student files and records - Process course permits, assist students with teaching and research
assistantships - Other duties related to student services as needed
Departmental Research:
- Direct support to the
Physics Chair for data gathering and analysis of Physics academic programs on an ongoing basis for comparative evaluation aimed at
increasing the department’s national ranking. - Evaluation and Assessment Support:
- Prepare, disseminate, and record student
evaluations of teaching - Assist with annual faculty reviews and tenure-and-promotion packets
- Manage Assigned Faculty Duties
& Faculty Academic Reporting – AFD-FAR FIS system - Enter faculty assignments into FAIR/FIS
Outreach:
- Assist in the
creation of new informational materials, recruitment brochures, and website content on an ongoing basis not only for academic programs but
also for research programs. - Assist in alumni outreach for department development activities. Assist in the support of new program
to initiate direct contact with all four-year colleges with a Physics degree to expand our pool of graduate student applicants, and to
maintain this articulation on an ongoing basis. - Develop and maintain department’s presence on Web and social media
Office
Operations:
- Operations, Facilities & Perform other office related duties as needed
- Coordinate key distribution and
reconciliation Order office supplies/equipment - Serve as back-up for other office staff in purchasing, supplies, reception, mail,
Web
Course Management:
- Assist with typing, printing and copying syllabi
- Track graduate assistants efforts
- Enter information into Banner/OASIS student database system
POSITION
QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with four years of
experience in office or administrative positions. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/ technical training may substitute at an
equivalent rate for the required experience.
