Summary & Honors Program Information
The LSA Honors Program is seeking an energetic, experienced advisor to join a team of faculty, staff, and students in nurturing a culture of intellectual curiosity, integrity, academic innovation and excellence for all of its members. The advisor will maintain a caseload of students for general advising and will participate in all facets of advising, from individual meetings that support students in meeting university, college, and program requirements, to supporting students in developing their own personal, academic, and professional development, and to designing and implementing co-curricular programming that supports students’ ability to thrive in the LSA Honors Program and beyond.
The LSA Honors Program’s mission is to foster the intellectual, personal, and professional growth of students who demonstrate curiosity, integrity, and excellence, and who seek a rigorous and well-rounded undergraduate experience. The Honors experience provides stimulating coursework that represents the entire breadth of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. We strive to inspire students through personal advising relationships, and promote the individual development of our students by supporting research, travel, and civic endeavors. Responsibilities*
General Academic Advising
Assist students with long-and short-term academic planning, from orientation through graduation.
- Perform individual advising with students in a variety of modalities
- Assist students in their self-assessment of interests and skills pertinent to academic work, co-curricular interests, and postgraduate or career options
- Provide accurate information about University, College, and Program policies, procedures, resources and opportunities
- Serve as an informed resource for students and make referrals when appropriate
- Advise students regarding course selection during Orientation and Registration periods
- Maintain timely and accurate records of interactions with students, referrals, exceptions to standard procedures, and decisions affecting degree progress
- Maintain contact with advisees through relevant communication channels: respond to student inquiries; respond to progress reports; alert students to options and new opportunities consistent with their growth and development; plan appropriate outreach to students in academic difficulty
- Communicate with faculty and other administrators as needed Student
Success Advising and Leadership
- Serve on the Honors Academic Board, contributing to discussions and decisions about exceptions to degree and program requirements and provisions for students needing support or in special circumstances
- Exercise judgment and fairness when making decisions involving policy exceptions and students requiring support for academic recovery or improvement
- Provide student success advising for students as assigned
- Participate in opportunities such as committees, task forces, working groups, etc. that support student success
- Participate in Graduation Awards selection, and may participate in the following selection processes: Honors Summer Fellowship, Honors Grant Funding cycles and Critical Difference Funding; Honors Scholarship selection (e.g., Graf, Meiland, Benedek, and Wasserstein Awards)
- Contribute to the design, delivery, and implementation of workshops, group advising, and educational programs that expand student awareness of and preparedness to seek these or other resources, including those which expand student awareness of and preparedness to declare Honors in Engaged Liberal Arts and to the development of programming that furthers students’ HELA project design, implementation, and outcomes reporting, both for internal and external audiences
Admissions
- Participate in the selection process of new students for the Honors Program by reading and evaluating Honors admissions applications
- Attend training and deliberation meetings as developed by the Assistant Director
- Represent Honors to incoming students and their families when called upon to do so, in individual appointments, at Campus Day information sessions, or other recruiting and yield events on and off campus, as directed
Required Qualifications*
- Advanced degree in a liberal arts field, higher education, or area of study affording understanding of the undergraduate student experience
- At least three years academic advising experience in a college or university setting
- Track record of successful development and implementation of innovative programs, including their evaluation and assessment
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, including experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities
- Proven ability to successfully work in a collaborative team environment
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and respectful working relationships with students, staff, and faculty
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to maintain the integrity of confidential materials and student information
Desired Qualifications*
- Terminal degree in a liberal arts field
- Experience with budgeting, grant writing, and grant or award disbursement
- Familiarity with theories and applications of entrepreneurial, social entrepreneurial, and/or community-engaged learning
- Facilitate with technologies and policies that enhance program initiatives in selection processes and program delivery
