Position Summary: The
Director of Academic Advising is responsible for leading a student-centered unit dedicated to delivering equitable and holistic academic
advising that promotes the persistence, retention, and graduation of First-Year, Exploratory, and underprepared students. The Director
creates and sustains a student-ready culture that promotes excellence in student development, enrollment management, and academic advising.
In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Student Success and Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success, the
Director provides vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the First Year Advising Center and promotes quality advising services to
all students.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for the strategic planning and operational management of the
Academic Advising Office and staff within, ensuring alignment between advising initiatives and the University mission, values, and strategic
plan - Leads and supervises a staff of Academic Advisors, maintaining staff currency on national best practices in advising and
promoting cohesion among advisors - Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates Academic Advisors, promoting their professional
development and a high level of student care at Washburn University - Plays a direct role, in collaboration with the Associate Dean
of Student Success, in the onboarding and ongoing training of Student Success Coaches - Creates in the Academic Advising Office a
student-ready culture that encourages enrollment, retention, and graduation - Works with the Associate Dean and Vice President to
establish and support the implementation of institutional goals for enrollment, student success, retention, and completion -
Designs and oversees the daily operation and delivery of comprehensive and proactive advising activities that support the success of
students at an Open Admissions university - Collaborates with student support services, faculty, and campus leadership to develop
strategies, policies, and programs that create an inclusive and equitable learning community for special populations that positively impact
enrollment, retention, and graduation - Collaborates with campus offices to provide advising services and support at campus events,
including but not limited to New Student Orientation, Transfer Student Orientation, and other Registration Events - Working with
the Associate Dean and Vice President, establishes, monitors, and reports on assessment criteria to evaluate student support activities that
occur within the Academic Advising Office, especially early alerts and targeted interventions - Provides leadership and guidance in
the analysis, creation, and interpretation of student policies, procedures, and support programs, ensuring compliance with internal
regulations and State and Federal Law while removing barriers to student access and completion - Trains and develops advisors in
the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Applied Studies, School of Business, and School of Nursing to create a consistent advising
experience for students across campus - Advises the Associate Dean and Vice President promptly regarding students, personnel, and
resource management - Evaluates emerging technologies that support advising and student success activities, makes recommendations
to the Associate Dean and Vice President, and trains and develops the advising team and campus partners as appropriate - Ensures
critical Academic Advising support for the First-Year Experience Program, especially in WU101, the Washburn Experience - Presents
on advising services and frameworks to various campus and community audiences to support student/family education on majors and careers, and
faculty/staff professional development on advising best practices - Oversees the development of promotional materials and
publications to provide information to internal and external constituencies about services available in the Academic Advising Office - Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or appropriate
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in student activities, counseling, education, psychology or social work
- Five years experience in academic
advising - Proven ability to relate to and work well with faculty, staff, students, and co-workers
- Demonstrated capacity
to work effectively in a collaborative, team environment - Proven effective communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to
work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds who possess a broad range of academic skills and goals
Physical
Requirements:
Some early mornings, evenings and weekends beyond the regular office hours
Full time Exempt Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
