Department: 211000 – Office of the Dean Arts & Sciences

Position Summary

The advising coordinator is responsible for coordinating undergraduate advising and administrative activities crucial to the fulfillment of the mission of the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Essential Duties

  • Serves as the primary contact for students seeking advising in the School of Arts and Sciences, including meeting with students regarding issues that impact their academic progress and students who need special assistance
  • Manages all aspects of transfer advising in the school, including processing and reviewing transfer evaluations, reviewing and approving courses taken at other institutions, meeting with transfer students to discuss major and core course selection and assisting them with registration
  • Manages all aspects of probation advising, including, reviewing student records, preparing and sending correspondence, coordinating outreach to and meeting with students on probation
  • Coordinates aspects of the graduation advising process for undergraduates in the school, including holding meetings and advising programming for seniors preparing for graduation and reviewing students’ degree audits
  • Supports student registration, including preparing all registration advising information, assisting student progress through the core curriculum, providing outreach to students who are not registered, advising undecided majors in the school not otherwise assigned, and processing Advanced Placement credits for Arts and Sciences students
  • Collaborates with the Assistant Dean, department chairs, Admissions, the Registrar, and other campus partners on advising projects and initiatives
  • Assists the Assistant Dean on student issues, including attending Students of Concern meetings, probation advising, and responding and tracking student issues
  • Maintains accurate and comprehensive student records using university technology and assists with the assessment process.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Coordinates special projects and partnerships assigned by the Assistant Dean
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts major or related
  • A minimum of three years of experience in advising at higher education institutions
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices in advising
  • Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, internet search software, and function-specific databases
  • Experience using advising technology and data to accomplish tasks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of La Salle University

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Experience with data analytics and reporting
  • Previous experience using Ellucian’s Banner, Ellucian’s DegreeWorks, and Starfish
  • Previous experience with transfer advising processes, including reviewing and updating credit evaluations
  • Active engagement with professional development organizations, including NACADA

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

  • Evening and weekend work may be necessary during peak times or for special projects
  • Ability to operate office technology and sit for long periods of time
