Summary

The University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN), Office of Undergraduate Studies is seeking an Undergraduate Program Advisor. The Undergraduate Program Advisor will manage all aspects of the advising process for the Office of Undergraduate Studies, including functional supervision of other members of the advising team (e.g., Assistant Advisors, Work Study students). This position will oversee all aspects of undergraduate advising, including making decisions and recommendations on undergraduate advising processes and policies; will develop and implement student events and success programming to meet the diverse needs of students and will also coordinate advising-related issues with students, faculty, and staff including internal and external constituencies to the School of Nursing as necessary; and will promote learning for the diverse student population and assist with current student activities. Supervision is received from the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Responsibilities*

Undergraduate Student Advising

  • Conduct individualized assessments to tailor success strategies to meet the needs of a diverse population of students.
  • Assist with registration, minor and career exploration within and related to nursing. Experiential learning and career exploration activities include internships/externships and employment opportunities
  • Provide outreach and individualized plans for students who are experiencing difficulties
  • Engage in early academic intervention to a diverse cohort of students
  • Implement academic success strategies through individualized and group advising, including identification of academic, career, and economical resources
  • Provide advising for new and continuing undergraduate students on course selection and programs of study. Review student’s academic records for progress towards degree          
  • Utilize advising technology to schedule appointments, review transcripts/degree audits/early warning grades and record advising notes
  • Track progress of specific populations (e.g., students on probation) and provide proactive advising
  • Keep up to date with relevant advising practice and research
  • Independently approve and assist student in exploration of electives throughout the university that meet degree requirements, as well as evaluate and approve transfer courses

Program Coordination & Development

  • Provide leadership and oversight to the advising team for successful implantation of various student success programs, including but not limited to the following:

* Peer Mentorship Program
* Student Success
* Science Learning Circles
* Kaplan

  • Provide leadership, direction, and supervision of program student coordinators and mentors within the various student success programs (e.g., peer mentors, science learning circle leads)
  • Facilitate Student Organizations aligned with the school of nursing (e.g., Nursing Student Government, Student Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau)
  • Act as a liaison to all student service programs on campus and make appropriate referrals
  • Monitor student success and student resources, developing and implementing programs as needed
  • Orient students to academic programs and University services. Help develop and maintain student wellness programs
  • Create and implement a strategic plan to promote student success resources to the UG student body
  • Meet routinely with Instructional Design and Central departments to develop and utilize various methods for student communication and advising

Administration & Oversight

  • Functionally supervise academic advising team (e.g., assistant advisors, work-study students) as applicable to assure efficient advising processes and advising events 
  • Regularly review and update advising policies in collaboration with UG leadership team      
  • Supervise and develop academic support services aligned with the UG strategic plan to promote student success      
  • Participate as a non-voting member of committees and workshops within UMSN to advocate for the diverse needs of the UG students         
  • Execute large and small events including but not limited to the following:

* Career Fair
*  Career Seminar Series
*  Welcome Week activities
*  Commencement
* Resource Fair

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree strongly preferred. 
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of advising experience is necessary. Advising experience in higher education is required. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency at the advanced level with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). 
  • Candidate must have excellent communication skills, with the ability to receive and convey information clearly and concisely for various mediums. Must have very strong interpersonal, presentation (large and small groups) skills and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, manage, analyze and prepare data for presentation to a variety of audiences. 
  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills are required for this role. 
  • Demonstration of managing multiple demands and effective prioritization of workload. 

Attributes:

  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) strongly preferred. 
  • Must be student focused with the ability to guide students. 
  • Demonstrated excellent problem solving, conflict resolution and customer service skills. 
  • Must be able to work independently as well as effectively in teams. 
  • Ability to serve diverse populations. 
  • Must reliably manage multiple responsibilities and manage time effectively. 
  • Must be able to promote the goals of the School of Nursing. 
  • Must be a self-starter. 
  • Must be creative, have excellent judgment with a professional demeanor and presentation. 
  • Extensive knowledge with Business Objects queries and M-Pathway’s student system preferred. 
  • Knowledge of nursing or related field. 
  • Working knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures is preferred.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., some occasional weekend and evening hours may be required. The position is currently eligible for a remote work opportunity (1-2 day/week) after the orientation period has been completed and as determined by unit operational needs and policy.
