Job Description

BASIC
FUNCTION:

Responsible for making recommendations in the areas of compensation, staff selection, disciplinary actions, complaints,
staff performance appraisal and similar supervisory duties for program coordinator, graduate assistants and other student staff. Plans,
assigns, and evaluates the work of subordinates for effective operation and results of the unit. Reports directly to the Assistant/Associate
Vice President or another senior executive.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

This position supervises the Program
Coordinator for Intercultural Affairs and LGBTQ+ Resource Center.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The purpose of this
position is to provide direction of university-wide activities and initiatives designed to advance the university’s mission to heighten
sensitivity to issues of diversity on campus and deepen the university’s footprint in the international arena. Internal contacts include
senior executives, faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students and graduate assistants. The director may also work with other units
at the University such as the Ralph J. Bunche Center and academic departments in order to advance the University’s effort to raise its
international profile, create a more coherent and visible design for on-campus international students, and initiate programs to enhance
diversity awareness. External contacts include a wide variety of executives, faculty, and staff of other higher education and public and
private sector organizations.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Initiates and organizes programs that engage the entire
    university community, for example ‘International Week’ and helps to organize forums such as those that address critical issues like LGBT
    awareness.
  • Advises student organizations and organizes programs to engage transfer, commuter, graduate and other under-represented
    student populations.
  • Partners with academic departments and the Ralph J. Bunche Center to create international opportunities for
    students, such as study abroad experiences.
  • Works with Student Life and Activities to coordinate initiatives on behalf of general
    diversity and inclusion projects.
  • Responsible for providing supervision for one or more functions within a department:
    specifically, supervision of one graduate assistant – Intercultural Affairs and LGBTQ+ Resource Center and one full-time program
    Coordinator.
  • Formally plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates the work of these functions. Perform staff evaluations
    and make recommendations regarding performance.
  • Serves as a liaison with all academic colleges and campus divisions on
    integrating and assessing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts across campus, implementing cultural competency inclusion programs with
    academic departments, supporting faculty efforts, managing community outreach efforts.
  • Responsible for leading
    campus-wide inclusion training, managing the cultural competency training, and supporting diversity and inclusion committees within the
    schools and colleges.
  • The Director may also work with other units at the University such as the Interpersonal Violence
    and Prevention Program, Student Health Center, Ralph J. Bunche Center and academic departments in order to assist in the advancement of the
    division’s effort to encourage inclusion, to raise its international profile, create a more coherent and visible design for on-campus
    international students, and initiate programs to enhance gender and sexuality inclusion and other under-represented populations.
  • Advise identity-based student organizations as well as student organizations which support transfer students, commuter
    students, graduate students, and international students; develop strong advisory relationships with advisees. Apply student and leadership
    development theories to inform advisement practices. Inform students of university policies and procedures, train students in event planning
    and management, and assist with critical decision-making.
  • Facilitate dialogue-based spaces focusing on social identity,
    power and privilege, and community issues. Develop and write tailored curricula informed by the needs of participants in diversity and
    inclusion initiatives. Create, facilitate, and assess train-the-trainer workshops and facilitator trainings for students and
    staff.
  • Coordinate university contracts related to LGBTQ+ inclusion, ensure execution of contracts regarding training
    for faculty and staff. Initiate and organize awareness months and other programs that engage the entire university community on critical DEI
    issues, such as ‘International Week’, Transgender Day of Remembrance’, Transgender day of Visibility, LGBTQ+ Health and Wellness, ‘National
    Coming Out Day’, and ‘PRIDE Month’.
  • Serves as the advisor for and coordinates the event review and approval,
    purchasing, contract submission, budget development, stipend submission and tracking for the following organizations: CASCADE, African
    Students Association, Caribbean Students Association, Tropical Riddimz, International Pals, LGBTQ+ organizations, Transfer Student
    Association, and international organizations.
  • Maintains a pivotal role in triaging students, counseling, and making referrals
    for international, transfer, commuter and other under-represented students to support services and other specialists to ensure retention and
    matriculation.
  • Organizes and maintains Inclusive Language Pamphlet.
  • Represents the department on
    university and community committees – serves as the Chair of the university wide LGBTQ+ advisory committee and the International Student
    Task Force.
  • Responsible for supervision and goal setting of professionals, graduate and student staff. Sets goals and
    organizes resources to achieve the goals. Aligns area goals with the departmental, divisional and university mission
    statement.
  • Responsible for providing strategic reports and recommendations to Student Affairs on the activities in
    intercultural affairs.
  • Responsible for intercultural program development and
    evaluation.
  • Responsible for planning and execution of Annual Homecoming Renaissance Reception and Lavender Fund
    Scholarship. Responsible for promotion and collecting sponsorships of the Lavender Fund. Responsible for maintaining relationships with
    alumni and donors to encourage consistent giving. Responsible for scholarship review, recipient selection, and scholarship dissemination.
  • Attends conferences and forums that offer continued professional development and training in the field of the
    advisement of LGBTQ+ students and international students/organizations
  • Works in cooperative partnership with other
    international points of contact at the university to develop programs designed to enhance the international awareness of all Howard
    University students, faculty, and staff.
  • Works in cooperative partnerships across the university to develop programs related to
    diversity awareness.
  • Attends conferences and forums that offer continued professional development and training in the field of the
    advisement of international students and promoting diversity awareness on campus.
  • Responsible for supervision and goal setting of
    professional and support staff. Contributes as a strategic member of an administrative leadership team.
  • Responsible for the
    implementing and maintaining area budget.
  • Responsible for providing strategic reports and recommendations to administration on the
    activities in assigned areas.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in education,
    administration, student personnel services, or a related field, and a minimum of three years of administrative and budget management
    experience, required.
  • 15 years of related work experience may be substituted in lieu of educational
    qualifications.
  • Also necessary are strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills, and the ability to work
    independently and well under pressure, and to collaborate successfully with diverse groups.
  • Direct experience working
    with low-income students, underserved and underrepresented minority populations preferred.
  • Exceptional oral and
    written communication skills, as well as ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group situations are also
    desired.
  • Must be willing to maintain a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Some travel is required.
