Additional Information
SCS is the primary designated mental health service on campus and functions as a comprehensive counseling center for a campus population of just over 20,000 students. The center prides itself on proactive efforts to enhance the mental health of individuals, groups, and the campus community as a whole, and has a longstanding reputation for innovation and excellence in the full range of counseling center functions. In collaboration with the Multicultural Center, we seek a strong generalist who also brings a passion for working with underrepresented students in both a traditionally clinical and decolonized capacity. SCS values social justice and is seeking mental health professionals that have a demonstrated commitment to advancing the vision of an anti-racist counseling center and campus community as a whole. Notable features of this IACS accredited center include a vibrant and growing group therapy program, an active program evaluation team, highly creative outreach and consultation efforts, and one of the oldest APA accredited internship training programs in a counseling center setting. Many former staff and trainees of the center have become counseling center directors, training directors, researchers, and leading experts in the field of college student mental health. Administrative support for the center has resulted in a larger than average staff given the size of the university. We have not experienced any furloughs or layoffs in the recent economic downturn, and many of our initiatives to enhance services to students have received strong support. The Multicultural Center, a center for antiracism, identity, and belonging, was established in fall 2021. The Multicultural Center facilitates critical programs, services, and scholarship that promotes antiracism, equity, and justice to contribute to Illinois State University’s core values of diversity and inclusion. The Center is committed to centering and amplifying the voices and experiences of historically minoritized/marginalized communities. The Multicultural Center’s roots stem from both strong student advocacy and Illinois State University’s efforts to be a more inclusive and equity-oriented campus. As part of a comprehensive campus climate assessment, the need to “create and invest in affirming spaces for students of color” emerged as the precipice for creation of the Multicultural Center. The Center was developed and constructed with consultation of The Black Student Union, Pride, Asian Pacific American Coalition, and The Association of Latin American Students as accountability partners. The 17,000 square foot building includes multiple conference spaces, a prayer and reflection room, a podcast room, student leader offices, a green room, social justice library, gender affirmation clothing closet, kitchen, a family/lactation room, and gathering spaces. The Multicultural Center’s staff is comprised of five functional areas: Antiracism Education, Operations, Cultural and Social Justice Programming, Leadership and Community Development, and Decolonized Healing.
