JOB SUMMARY
Embedded in the office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Success (VCSS) under the shared oversight by the VCSS and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Alumni Engagement, the incumbent will focus on increasing alumni engagement through supporting alumni activity that happens throughout campus including the colleges, divisions and student experience programs. This position will be instrumental in building infrastructure to support alumni engagement across our decentralized campus in a coordinated, sustainable way. The Associate Director of Alumni Diversity Programs will provide strategic direction for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work with the alumni community. An experienced leader of both staff and volunteers, the incumbent anticipates and responds to evolving alumni interests and preferences for programs and ways to engage, and collaborates with a range of partners and stakeholders to foster an inclusive and welcoming community among a diverse and global population of alumni.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $67,000 – $76,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES
90% – Student Success Outreach and Alumni Engagement Support
Serve as a thought leader, key partner, steward, and champion to deepen the Alumni Engagement program’s approach to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
Oversee both strategy and implementation for increasing organizational capacity for DEIB among staff, alumni, the Alumni Council, other volunteers, and ensure that program delivery and outcomes are inclusive and equitable.
Serve as the alumni engagement liaison for the campus resource centers, with a special focus on the four Ethnic Resource Centers.
Build infrastructure that sustains campus alumni engagement through staff changes.
Identify, recruit, manage, and cultivate alumni volunteers to support the campus based alumni engagement programs.
Launch diversity alumni programs that support the values of equity, inclusion and belonging.
Support current campus programs and events in these areas that have the capacity to engage alumni.
Build bridges to make the general UC Santa Cruz alumni programs and communications accessible, inviting, and engaging to alumni of all backgrounds.
Partner with the Development to support fundraising initiatives.
10% – Alumni Engagement Team Support and Special Projects
Support the Alumni Engagement Team programs including the Regional Program Recent Grad Program, Student Engagement Program, Alumni Weekend, Reunion Program, Notable Alumni, Alumni Businesses, Crowdfunding, and other special projects that engage our alumni constituents as needed.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with alumni, internal and key constituencies.
- Thorough knowledge of the campus, its mission, goals, objectives, programs, achievements, infrastructure and issues of concern.
- Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications, tact and political acumen to effectively represent the campus.
- Thorough research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skill to correctly identify real and potential problems, developing and maintaining metrics, advising management as required, and proposing effective strategic resolutions.
- Skill in project management, including event planning and meeting deadlines, and conceptualizing, coordinating, and evaluating programs.
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize projects and work flow, pay strict attention to detail, and complete a number of competing assignments within established deadlines.
- Must be able to work both independently and as a team to effectively represent UCSC at various functions with campus and system wide administrators, legislators, alumni, key volunteers, donors and prospects, parents, and other constituencies.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen, relate and interact with a wide range of people of different lifestyles and ages, and to respond flexibly and positively in difficult circumstances.
- Oral presentation skills sufficient to develop and give oral presentations to groups and to explain policies and procedures to individuals.
- Effective computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheets and databases to retrieve and compile documents and historical information for reports, donors information and alumni engagement.
- Understanding of the impact of philanthropy and openness to support fundraising initiatives.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Experience supervising student interns and staff.
- Experience working in higher ed particularly on alumni programs.
- Ability to make “cold calls” with alumni to determine their interest in becoming more engaged with UCSC.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- Must be able to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Ability to work a variable schedule.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
- Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
- Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
