Job Description

Position Summary

The Assistant Director for Belonging and Engagement will manage programs and services
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) students and diverse student populations. This position will provide leadership
for diversity education programs and services that support minoritized, marginalized, and underrepresented sexual and racial identities and
educate the general student population on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion. As a member of the Office of Multicultural Affairs
team, this person will provide support for the retention efforts of diverse students and support other work of the office as needed.

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

LGBTQ+ and Diversity Education Programs, Services, and
Student Support:

  • Support the diversity initiatives of the Office of Multicultural Affairs for students, faculty and staff
    at BGSU by coordinating LGBTQ+ and diversity education, workshops, programs, support groups, mentoring programs, etc.

o Examples of the above include but are not limited to:

o Maintain the LGBTQ+
and Multicultural Student Resource Centers by keeping supplies and resources current to supplement campus resources. Maintain the space for
students’ use and access and other day-to-day operations of the Centers. 

o Provide overall
leadership, training, and supervision of the Office of Multicultural Affairs Ambassadors (OMAA) programs and work responsibilities.

o Coordinate and/or supervise general diversity education programs for students, student groups, classrooms,
events for students, student leaders, etc. (including partnership diversity education programs, e.g., Inclusive Leadership Certificate
Program).

o Organize programming themed around LGBTQ+ student life, including campus-wide events such as
Big Gay Welcome, LGBTQ+ History Month, Transgender Awareness Week, Rainbow Days, Family Weekend Reception, Lavender Graduation and other
programs. 

o Lead, coordinate and schedule student-focused diversity education and assist with Safe
Zone workshops, panels, and other related initiatives. 

o Coordinate support groups for students of
color and LGBTQ+ students in collaboration with the Counseling Center. 

o Facilitate the Office of
Multicultural Affairs liaison relationships with the Black Student Union, Latino Student Union, Asian Student Union and/or other diverse
organizations. Serve as an advisor to these student organizations if requested. 

o Work with campus
units including but not limited to athletics and academic affairs to cultivate an inclusive environment for diverse student populations.

o Coordinate BGSU student participation in the students’ professional development opportunities (e.g.,
Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Ally College Conference (MBLGBTACC)), as funds allow.

Multicultural Advising and
Retention Support: 

  • Advise diverse students participating in the Multicultural Student Link program or other retention
    programs of the office with services such as monitoring academic progress by reviewing mid-term grades and by providing additional intrusive
    advising assistance, as needed. 
  • Assist diverse students with implementing academic success strategies, overcoming
    transitional issues, social integration, challenges with identity and the intersectionality of identities, financial aid awareness,
    etc.
  • Provide holistic/intrusive advising on a walk-in basis and through caseload assignment for at-risk and diverse
    students. 
  • Provide support for the Multicultural Student Link program.

Supervision: 

  • Provide leadership and guidance to graduate assistant(s). Complete evaluations and assess progress related to Program Competencies

Support Recruitment of Diverse Student Populations: 

  • Participate in Office of Admissions recruitment
    programs such as University Orientation, road trips, Guidance Counselor Days, etc. as needed.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Knowledgeable about diversity, equity, and inclusion
    and able to develop, supervise, and train student employees to facilitate workshops
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written
    communication skills
  • Knowledge of retention strategies and theories for diverse student groups
  • Knowledge of assessments;
    ability to gather and analyze data and to draw relevant conclusions from the data
  • Ability to keep complete, detailed, and accurate
    written and electronic records
  • Word processing and computer skills

Minimum Qualifications

The following Degree is required:

  • Master’s Degree. Degree must be conferred at time of
    application.

The following Experience is required:

  • 2 years of experience working with
    diverse student populations
  • 2 years of experience coordinating and providing education workshops


Salary

Full-time Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 355. Salary is commensurate with
education and experience. Full benefits package available.
