Job Description

Dickinson College and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites applications for the Director of
the LGBTQ Center. The Center works to create a welcoming, safe, inclusive, and equitable environment for LGBTQIA+ members of the
Dickinson community. The Director is charged with promoting a campus culture of inclusion and belonging, specifically around gender
identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. The Director will accomplish this through events/programs that are affirming and that
build community and belonging, and by offering educational opportunities that build awareness and promote change.
Dickinson College is a private 4-year residential liberal arts college with approximately 2,200 students. Committed to representation,
advocacy, and social justice, Dickinson supports: the Center Civic Learning and Action, the Center for Sustainability and Education, the
House Divided Project, the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues, and the newly funded Center for the Futures of Native People. Through our
shared governance model, the Director of the LGBTQ Center will collaborate with these centers in addition to committees such as
the Equity, Inclusivity, and Belonging Committee, Bias Education and Response Team, and the Queer & Trans Advocacy Committee.
Located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Dickinson enjoys close proximity to the rich social and cultural diversity of the region.
The College is a short 25-minute drive from the capital city (Harrisburg) and a two-hour drive from Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and
Philadelphia. Students, faculty, and staff often enjoy the food, art, entertainment, and cultural enrichment of these major hubs and/or New

The Director of the LGBTQ Center is
responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to foster a campus environment that affirms and supports LGBTQ+ belonging,
equity, and inclusion. Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, the Director serves as a critical member of the
leadership team in the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The Director is charged with designing, implementing, and assessing
innovative programming to promote learning and improve the campus climate for LGBTQ students, alumni, faculty, staff, families,
friends, and allies. Working in collaboration with campus stakeholders, the Director is responsible for the coordination of programs,
educational trainings, and advocacy for members of the community who identify as LGBTQ+ and their allies.

Essential
Functions:
  • Create vision and oversee strategic programming that contribute to the enrichment of the Dickinson
    College community, and to the development of LGBTQ+ identity (e.g., National Coming Out Day, LGBT History Month, Trans Day of
    Remembrance, Pride Week, Lavender Graduation, keynote speakers, conducting workshops/trainings, etc.). Working to create an atmosphere of
    safety for all Dickinson community members free from transphobia, homophobia, heterosexism, and gender bias.
  • Demonstrate a
    commitment to continuous improvement by: engaging in ongoing assessment to ensure that services remain dynamic, responsive, and relevant to
    the needs of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff; attending regional and national conferences; pursuing professional development
    opportunities; and engaging in the life of the College.
  • Remain current with relevant research, legal issues, and trends in higher
    education impacting Director’s area(s) of responsibility—allowing for decision-making that is informed, student-centered and/or
    data-driven.
  • Assist in the development and effective implementation of policies and procedures that promote belonging, equity, and
    inclusion for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff. Work in collaboration with, and in support of, VP/Chief Diversity Officer, Legal Counsel,
    Human Resources and other stakeholders to ensure that policies are compliant, mission driven, and demonstrative of our commitment to
    equity.
  • Work collaboratively with college partners to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable campus
    environment—fostering community through intersectional approaches which consider race, class, religion, national origin, etc. This
    includes, but is not exclusive too, leading working groups, service on college-wide committees, partnering with units such as athletics,
    human resources, student life, and academic affairs.
  • Be a visible advocate and knowledgeable resource on campus, with work that
    spans the academic, co-curricular, and social life of the College. Advise student leaders and student organizations in the development of
    programs and activities—providing direction and support for these student-led initiatives.
  • Provide the campus community with
    clear and accessible information about the LGBTQ Center—its services and resources. Effectively communicating the work of
    the Center by maintaining website, publishing newsletter, posting to social media, and other creative means of engagement.
  • Supervision: Recruit, train and provide direct supervision of a team of student workers who assist with essential functions related to
    the Center. Delegate administrative task to, and provide indirect supervision for one (1) FTE Administrative Assistant.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree -Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Public Policy,
Sociology, Social Work, Gender/Queer Studies or other related field

3-5 years work experience

Preferred:

Master’s Degree – Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Public Policy, Sociology, Social Work,
Gender/Queer Studies or other related field
