Job Description:

Budget Title: Instructional Support Associate (SL-2)

Salary: $40,000+ depending on experience (10-month, college-year
appointment)

Binghamton University Theater is seeking an Assistant Technical Director/Props person to participate in the building,
movement, and installation of stage scenery and work on the creation, acquisition and maintenance of prop elements for the production
season. The Department is committed to inclusive undergraduate teaching/mentoring for our diverse and ambitious student body and a faculty

Duties:

  • Participate in the construction and rigging of
    scenery, rough and finish carpentry, scenic painting, welding and installation of scenic elements.
  • Day-to-day direction and
    prioritization of the prop acquisition to meet production timelines. Hands-on fabrication of props as needed. Acquire necessary prop
    elements for production through borrowing, building, or buying. Includes check-ins/outs, packing/unpacking, restocking.
  • In
    conjunction with other production staff members, ensure proper training of students in the use of scene shop tools and equipment. Supervise
    students in execution of scenery/prop creation and prop run duties during production, build, load-in, technical rehearsals, strikes, and
    other projects as assigned. Translate artistic designs into construction drawings (CAD) as directed by Technical Director and communicate
    design and technical information to undergraduate student crews.
  • Organization and maintenance of the scene shop, its equipment and
    supplies and all performance spaces.
  • Be familiar with and enforce applicable theater and shop safety codes and practices.
  • Be
    comfortable working at heights on ladders and personnel lifts.
  • Coordinate with Stage Management to support properties in rehearsal.
    Represent the properties area at production meetings and tech rehearsals.
  • Communicate and collaborate with TD regularly. Communicate
    with Directors, Designers and Production Staff to ensure all props maintain the design while fulfilling the needs of the production.
    Communicate with other production departments when prop elements may be crossover pieces to ensure efforts are not being
    duplicated.
  • When purchasing props/supplies, maintain and track the properties expenditures so as to stay within budget. Submit all
    necessary paperwork for purchases, trades, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Have shopping skills and knowledge of local and national
    sources. Ability to establish and maintain established relationships with local vendors.
  • Have a working knowledge of period styles,
    crafting, floral arranging, soft goods, upholstery, casting, scenic painting, furniture carpentry, and computer skills.
  • Maintain
    prop storage areas and keep inventory of all items inside.
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student
    success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
  • Advise, aid and supervise students in props for Studio
    Season.
  • Assist with events in Theater Dept.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working in a scene shop and/or in props acquisitions in a professional and/or
    academic setting
  • Knowledgeable about applicable safety codes and practices
  • Have a valid driver’s license and clean driving
    record
  • Microsoft Office knowledge (Word and Excel) and/or Google suite
  • Be able to have a flexible schedule, including
    weekends and evenings as necessary.
  • Be comfortable working at heights on ladders and personnel lifts. Ability to lift and move
    equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Excellent work ethic including attention to detail, time management, work flow, management, self-motivation,
    problem solving, meeting deadlines and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in most of these skills: carpentry, furniture
    construction, sewing, painting, Photoshop or Illustrator, and the ability to use many of the tools necessary to perform these types of
    duties
  • The ability to read and interpret construction and design drawings

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of an
    inventory management system
