About this Opportunity
Ball State University is seeking a team-oriented stage professional committed to planning, executing and delivering exceptional stage lighting for a wide variety of functions including national and international artists, touring productions, university convocations, and campus events as well as community functions at Emens Auditorium and other venues at our institution. This position will be involved in all facets of stage production including video projection, rigging and sound, yet the main focus of responsibility remains providing optimal stage lighting for live events, delighting patrons and providing input regarding system and equipment upgrades. Regular hours frequently involve overtime, evenings and weekend shifts. Emens Auditorium is located in the heart of the Ball State University campus in Muncie, Indiana. The salary range for this position is up to $52,000.00 annually.

Position Function
Designated as the second in charge of production activity, the Assistant Stage Manager will engage in the maintenance, repair, set up and operations of complex technical systems including but not limited to lighting, audio, rigging, staging and scenery as needed for Emens Auditorium, Pruis Hall, Sursa Hall, Worthen Arena, Brown Amphitheater and other University venues as assigned. Although involved in all facets of stage production, this position is focused predominantly in the area of lighting design and operations for live events with special emphasis on providing high quality lighting enhancement for varied events. Assist other auditorium staff in deployment of other technical systems.
Minimum Education
Associate’s degree or equivalent in, Theater production, electronics technology or related field.
Minimum Experience
Over five through eight years of experience in concert tour production, technical theatre, stage crafts, or related field; previous experience in operating GrandMA lighting consoles; experience with AutoCad or Vecterworks software.
Authorization to work in the US
Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Education
Bachelors’s degree in theatre, electronics technology or related field.
Preferred Experience
Over eight years of experience in technical theatre, stage crafts or related field; intelligent lighting experience. Previous experience working with MAnet and ARTnet lighting protocals.

Duties & Responsibilities

Operate, deploy and maintain auditorium lighting system; includes control surfaces, fixtures, cables, dimmers, etc; install hardware and software system updates as required; determine necessary equipment for locally produced shows; work with touring productions to integrate systems and supplement with house or rental equipment as required; program and operate intelligent lighting for productions as required. - Ranking: 2
Develop and design technical system upgrades for facilities supported by this department; research options and make recommendations for acquisition. - Ranking: 3
Plan, schedule and manage production activity for events in coordination with the Stage Manager, providing coverage in the Stage Manager’s absence or as directed. Supervise and direct stagehands, i.e., carpenters, lighting crews, and wardrobe crews in the completion of tasks. - Ranking: 4
Set up, operate, troubleshoot and tear down video projection as required; assist presenters with integration of video content. - Ranking: 5
Operate and maintain auditorium counterweight fly rail system; calculate weights; integrate flying pieces such as background drops into stage fly space. - Ranking: 6
Hang rigging points and other rigging equipment; utilize electric chain hoists to lift trusses, audio speakers, scenery pieces and other staging equipment - Ranking: 7
Install symphony shell; set up, maintain, and tear down risers, stage platforms, and other stage equipment. - Ranking: 8
Acquire & maintain knowledge of environmental and other safety concerns. - Ranking: 9
Assume the responsibilities of the Auditorium Stage Manager in his/her absence as assigned. - Ranking: 10
