Lighting and Sound Technician – VCUarts – Department of Theatre

This is a benefited 10-month
professional staff position in a fast-paced and high volume environment. Competitive salary, health benefits, leave and retirement plans are
available and pro-rated based on a 10-month work period. The 10-month work period aligns with the academic calendar and is effective for the
period beginning August 16 through June 15 each year.

Reporting to the Senior Director of the Fine Arts Group and the Chair of the
Department of Theatre, this position will lead the lighting and audio operations for the department, perform necessary maintenance to
complex and expensive equipment, ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff working with lighting, electrical and audio equipment in
the facilitation of theatrical productions, and support student progress towards degree completion by participating in practicum courses
related to lighting.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with lighting and sound designers to ensure a
    successful and safe production season
  • Provide quality control to ensure all lighting and sound equipment is safely
    installed
  • Maintain all lighting and sound equipment and keep accurate inventory
  • Lead student electricians through the hang,
    cabling, programming, and focus of lighting plots
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and resolving issues with equipment and completing
    necessary repairs
  • Research new equipment and software to keep up to date with technology and best practices
  • Attend and
    participate in load-ins, focus, lighting calls, strikes, technical rehearsals, and performances as needed
  • Works independently or
    with the appropriate team member(s) in identifying and managing the resolution of issues that may arise in the workplace
  • Keeps
    immediate supervisor promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance
  • Attend production
    meetings
  • Prepare sound equipment for productions
  • Consulting as needed on productions, particularly in terms of
    scheduling
  • Supervision of student crews

Instructional Support:

  • Safety supervision and
    training of students working with lighting and sound equipment and in lighting practicum and lighting and sound crews
  • General
    support for practicum courses may include set and clean up, and/or supervision of students completing those tasks
  • Supervision of
    students during class periods in which technical work is happening in any performance or workspace
  • Collaborate in planning for
    practicum/crew courses
  • Manage and maintain the Light Lab, lighting equipment inventory, Including, but not limited
    to:
    •  Repair/troubleshooting of broken lighting fixtures (conventional and intelligent), cable, dimmers, and lighting
      infrastructure
    •   Repair and maintenance of requisite tools and equipment used in the Light Lab and in theatrical lighting, sound,
      and projection
    • Troubleshooting and repair or recommend how to repair other electrical and/or electronic equipment. (i.e.,
      projectors, sound mixers, etc.)
  • Research and advise on equipment purchases for lighting, projection, and sound
    equipment
  • Maintain lamp inventory and organize purchasing as needed
  • Fixed Asset Manager

Safety
Responsibilities:

  • Providing day-to-day safety oversight
  • Ensuring proper training of all using equipment prior
    to utilizing equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness of all workspaces to ensure workspaces are hazard-free
  • Ensure that all tools and
    supplies are stored properly
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of and adherence to all safety protocols and procedures

Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BFA in Technical Theater or a minimum of 2 years related experience as a
    theatrical electrician in a leadership role or as a production electrician
  • Ability to use different lighting consoles and console
    programming, specifically, ETC EOS family control consoles
  • Experience with lighting and sound control network
    systems
  • Ability to work with and mentor students at various skill levels
  • Experience with all phases of installation,
    operation, and maintenance of theatrical lighting and sound equipment 
  • Rigging knowledge and ability to ensure all lighting and
    sound equipment is installed safely and weighted properly
  • Expert knowledge of how to use utilizing Lightwright, Vectorworks and
    QLab
  • Must be comfortable with ladders and heights
  • Must be able to lift and move items 75lbs
  • Some work will occur on
    weekends and evenings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic use of soldering
    equipment
  • Experience in an educational theatrical setting
