Job Description Summary
This is a recruitment for a short-term/temporary position. This recruitment will be open until the positions are filled. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning July 5, 2023.
DEFINITION:
Provide individual and small group tutoring to students in the Student Success Center. Tutors assist students in understanding subject concepts and support them in improving their academic achievement by emphasizing study skills and learning strategies. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, or working on solutions to problems.
Essential Functions & Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Always wear your nametag while tutoring.
- Ensure that students have logged in before receiving services and remind students to sign out when leaving.
- Be prepared, present and punctual for your scheduled tutoring hours.
- Be knowledgeable about academic resources available in the Center and on campus.
- Work with students on a drop-in format, individual basis or in small-groups, to enhance deeper learning of a subject.
- Assist students in improving academic achievement by promoting active learning and study skills.
- Exhibit a positive welcoming attitude.
- Assist with other Student Success Center tasks and projects when needed.
- Demonstrate a commitment to student success in coursework.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully.
- Work productively with students and staff from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Demonstrate the learning process, show alternative methods of completing work, and encourage practice opportunities.
- Use the computer, including the Internet and some online platforms, for tutoring.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Follow guidelines outlined by the district and the Student Success Center Associate Director.
Qualifications for Level I Tutor:
- Must have earned a B or better in the course/subject applying to tutor.
- Must list at least one Cuesta College or Cal Poly faculty reference on the application.
- Must commit to completing CSS 168/CSS 768- Tutor Training Topics.
Qualifications for Level II Tutor:
- Meet qualifications listed above, worked as a tutor for 2 semesters, and completed CSS 168/CSS 768.
- Student who completed bachelor’s degree can start at level II per Associate Director’s approval.
- If working under grant/categorical special projects, guidelines may require higher payrate.
Additional Information
This is a short-term/temporary position. Students currently enrolled at Cuesta College will be given priority.
