St. Catherine University invites applications for the Academic Support Specialist, Writing and Reading position with the O’Neill Center.
The O’Neill Center provides academic support to all students and creates and promotes accessible and inclusive learning environments. The O’Neill Center is part of the Office of Academic Success and comprises tutoring and mentoring programs in the areas of Writing/Reading, Math/Science, along with general content tutoring, and tutoring for ELL students. The Center also cultivates the leadership potential of peer tutors so that students with questions can learn from those who have experience. This position exists to plan and supervise all the academic support services in writing and reading offered by the O’Neill Center. The Academic Support Specialist, Writing and Reading will:
- Provide professional consultations for referred students and serves as a resource for the university on best practices for providing academic support in writing and reading for a diverse student body
- Develop and maintain the graduate tutoring program, including continual training and mentoring of graduate assistants
- Collaborate with staff of the O’Neill Center and partners with faculty and staff across the university to address the learning needs of students, particularly in the areas of writing and reading.
- Provide one-on-one academic tutoring sessions for students who are referred by faculty
- Update and maintain internal website for writing tutors with relevant resources
- Manage the writing and reading resources and information on the O’Neill Center webpage
- Cultivate and sustain partnerships with faculty, students, and staff
- Keep accurate record-keeping of student tutoring usage
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise peer tutors to support students
- Coordinate the activities of the Writing and Reading Center (on-site and online).
- Participate in professional development opportunities (e.g., conferences, roundtables, workshops) and professional organizations related to the writing and reading center.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Masters degree in Writing, Reading, Developmental Education or related field.
- Knowledge of composition and writing skills, and writing development.
- Experience in tutoring and/or the teaching of writing and/or reading at the college level.
- Experience in Microsoft Office Suite and Canvas.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with ESL/multilingual students.
- Experience envisioning and implementing new programs and approaches to meet emerging needs of students.
