Job Description

Position Summary

Academic math coachs are responsible for providing virtual academic assistance to undergraduate students
in a variety of forms, including synchronous and asynchronous coaching sessions, workshops, SI, and webinars. Math coachs review classroom
or course topics and assignments to prepare for leading study sessions. Math coachs assist students in developing strong mathematical and
quantitative reasoning skills. Coachs will identify the student’s unique learning strengths and promote self-confidence and independence.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist students in understanding one or more of the following: general mathematics,
    calculus, algebra, statistics, computer science, physics, and quantitative reasoning.
  • Provide synchronous one-to-one and group
    academic coaching.
  • Provide asynchronous screencast or written feedback.
  • Assist students in understanding key concepts,
    especially those learned in the classroom.
  • Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research, and other
    academic tasks.
  • Assist students in becoming autonomous, self-directed learners.
  • Provide post-coaching session feedback to
    students.
  • Maintain records of student contact.
  • Engage in the assessment of student learning.
  • Help students identify
    their learning strengths and weaknesses and connect them with the necessary resources to aid in success.
  • Evaluate student learning
    styles, skills, deficiencies, and goals; identify appropriate learning resources for them to use and facilitate their use of those
    resources.
  • Develop academic resources to include video tutorials and lessons on assigned topics.
  • Stay current with
    organizational, educational, and faculty development policies that affect the academic Success Center (ASC).
  • Support the mission of
    the academic Success Center (ASC) within National University.
  • Participate in required training, coaching, and other activities that
    promote high-quality coaching.
  • Attend team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Academic Success Center (ASC) Director
    and/or Associate Director.
  • Reasonable and consistent attendance to fulfill the requirements of the position.

Requirements:

Education &
Experience:

  • Master’s degree required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant coaching experience within a higher
    education environment.
  • Demonstrated success working with non-traditional (adult) students required.
  • Previous success in
    tutoring, academic coaching, or teaching related subjects is required.
  • Ability to provide personalized instruction in non-technical
    language based on students’ unique strengths and growth areas with little to no preparation required.
  • Experience in an online
    learning environment is required.
  • Proficiency in using technology in the delivery of education required.
  • Experience working
    with online students preferred.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Experience working in a technology-driven
    enterprise preferred.
  • All skills, abilities, and education will be considered for minimum qualifications.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Knowledge of adult learning theories and cognitive load
    theories.
  • Undergraduate level math, calculus, algebra, statistics, computer science, physics, and/or quantitative reasoning
    skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of APA formatting relating to the presentation of calculations.
  • Excellent analytical, and
    problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in an online environment.
  • Skill in operating equipment, such as personal computer
    and phone system.
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment with aggressive goals and a commitment to quality.
  • Ability
    to work effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to establish online rapport and maintain a friendly, helpful, patient attitude and
    demeanor.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and other applications in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to participate as an
    active team member of the team and organization and work toward a common goal. Contributes fully to the team effort and plays an integral
    part in the smooth running of teams without necessarily taking the lead.
  • Accepts personal accountability, proactively seeks
    resolution for personal limitations head-on; and supports honesty and respect towards others, the company and oneself.
  • Actively
    seeks to influence, build effective relationships and gain alignment with peers, functional partners and/or external partners to accomplish
    business objectives.

  • Working knowledge, principles and practices of office management/systems within a

    consistent with the organization’s objectives. As a leader, develops goals based on the organization’s vision, mission, strategic goals and
    objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individual of constituencies
    in a diverse community.
  • Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team of diverse cultures,
    while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities.
  • Intermediate use of computers
    and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.  Experience using Student Information System (SIS) such
    as SOAR/Peoplesoft systems.

Candidate receiving offers
will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies. 
Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be
offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency. Base pay is one component of National University’s total

Compensation Range:

Hourly: $24.86 – $32.32
