Temporary Professional Tutor

Summary Description:
Provides in-person writing tutoring to meet a wide variety of student needs, from first-year papers to senior projects, as well as applications for grad school, internships, and others; mentors undergraduate writing consultants; supports the work of colleagues; and participates in First-Year Program outreach.

Anticipated Salary Range:

Responsibilities:

  • Offer professional tutorials on a flexible schedule: mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends, as need demands.
  • Tutor students who are struggling with the writing process or a specific writing project: under-prepared students, proficient ESL students, thesis writers, and MAT students.
  • Mentor peer consultants by observing sessions and discussing methodologies.
  • Support the First-Year Program through classroom introductions to academic services, and through WC workshops.
  • Assist the Director of the Writing Center, other Writing Center staff with projects as necessary.
  • Participate in staff development lunches.

Additional Responsibilities:
o Actively support the colleges plan to be an antiracist institution by understanding, engaging with, and promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity in the college community.
o Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe
situations and accidents; following college procedures; and participating in appropriate safety training.
o Demonstrate environmental sustainability by using college resources wisely and supporting the colleges sustainability
initiatives and innovation.
o Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree plus two years of writing center experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to think critically and solve problems; good judgment and discretion to handle confidential or sensitive information; organizational and customer service skills; interpersonal skills include tact, patience, emotional intelligence, and an ability to listen and manage conflict.

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree; experience with LD and ESL students; knowledge of the Block Plan.
