The Vice President of Finance assists the Chief Financial Officer in the reporting, stewardship, and oversight of institutional financial resources. The position requires leadership in budgeting and financial strategy, business services, financial services, risk management and legal compliance.   Management strengths are needed in strategic planning, staff development, financial analysis and forecasting, business model design, contract negotiation, conflict resolution, and the ability to collaborate with teams across the organization.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Financial Services-

  • Oversight of accounting day-to-day operations.
  • Coordinate yearly financial audit and 990 filings to meet reporting deadlines.
  • Financial reporting as requested by internal or external parties.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Conduct financial analyses to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Oversee operations of Accounts Payable and Purchasing departments.
  • Administration of annuity reporting in various states such as CA, NJ, NY.  Responsible for annual 1099 R filing.
  • Maintain treasury program through the coordination of cash flow budgeting with operational budgeting, to ensure adequate cash reserves for operations.
  • Oversee the management of the university’s endowment and restricted funds to ensure compliance with donor restrictions.

Budgeting and FP&A-

  • Oversight of the operational budget program, currently totaling $175+ million, comprised of 150+ budget units.
  • Coordination of capital and technology budgeting needs in collaboration with Information Technology and Operations divisions.
  • Lead the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) initiatives, providing guidance, mentoring, and development opportunities to team members.
  • Develop and maintain financial models, tools, and dashboards to support forecasting, variance analysis, and business performance evaluation.
  • Provide in-depth financial analysis, including identifying trends, analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs), and preparing insightful reports for senior management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive the annual strategic planning process, including long-term financial projections, scenario analysis, and investment decisions.
  • Conduct regular financial reviews with department heads, providing actionable insights and recommendations for improving financial performance.
  • Monitor and report on key financial metrics, highlighting risks, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy within the FP&A function.

Business Services-

  • Record and maintain all vendor contract files.
  • Oversight of the University purchasing program; by combining and bidding purchases for office supplies, printing, leased equipment, travel, fuel, etc.  Includes administration of p-card program.
  • Development and operation of the University’s self-funded student health insurance program for athletes and international students.
  • Development of pricing and operational policies for athletic and church based summer camps.
  • Oversee Campus Post Office and Printing/Duplication departments.

Risk Management-

  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in the procurement of all lines of insurance coverage for the University, including educator’s legal liability, fiduciary liability, cyber liability, medical malpractice, worker’s compensation, and key-man life coverage.
  • Assist in the administration of insured claims made for property, liability and worker’s compensation losses.

Other-

  • All other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • CPA and/or Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience in higher education or non-profit accounting preferred
  • Management strengths in strategic planning, staff development, financial analysis and forecasting, business model design, contract negotiation, conflict resolution, and the ability to collaborate with teams across the organization.
  • Experience in financial planning, budgeting, and financial reporting, and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and financial standards established by FASB.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, leadership skills that encourage teamwork and participative decision-making, and superior coaching and mentoring abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience and success forming and maintaining public/private partnerships, evidence of generating revenue through entrepreneurial initiatives, and experience in various integrated accounting and administrative information systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with attention to details, timelines, deadlines and the University-wide context of decisions.
