Position Description
Provides leadership and
administration within a college or school, in accordance with established guidelines, university policy and/or governmental
regulations.
Major/Essential Functions
The Associate Dean of the Texas Tech Honors College is a key member of the Colleges
administrative leadership team, and provides leadership for undergraduate research, faculty, and student support staff in our collective
efforts to support the programs and mission of the College. In this 12-month administrative role, the duties of the Associate Dean of the
Texas Tech Honors College include: directing the Undergraduate Research Scholars program (while continuing to strengthen undergraduate
research with partners across campus) and maintaining budgetary stewardship over undergraduate research budgets; assigning Honors College
faculty to courses and (in collaboration with the Dean) maintaining faculty workload, and (with the Assistant Dean and Curriculum Committee)
keeping the curricula current; maintaining data collection, review, and report generation for institutional, College, and accreditation
reporting; being a source of information for Honors College faculty, staff, and students; leading (and directing the growth of) the Honors
thesis program, serving as faculty mentor for Honors Science and Humanities (HSH) majors, and (with key stakeholders) strengthening the
Honors contracts and HE+ initiatives; maintaining an understanding of graduation requirements for Honors students; leading summer
orientation engagement efforts; serving as the main point of contact to support and resolve student academic affairs matters; in
collaboration with the Dean, mentoring departmental faculty, scheduling and completing peer observation of teaching, conducting annual
performance reviews of faculty, overseeing faculty promotion and tenure processes; maintaining College compliance for efforts relevant to
assessment, reporting, tenure and promotion, annual and third year reviews, faculty awards, catalog copy, grading, enrollment, and grants,
and sharing deadlines with relevant groups and/or individuals in the Honors College; requesting faculty lines from the Dean annually; and
overseeing graduate students (when appropriate).
The Associate Dean is expected to attend Associate Deans, Chairs Council, and
Administrative Council meetings and to keep the Dean and faculty informed of Council deliberations and administrative actions, as well as
other matters of operational and administrative importance to the Honors College and the University as a whole. Particular attention will be
paid to working with Associate Deans and Chairs in other Colleges to formulate and implement academic polices consistent with University
processes, and towards our pursuit of excellence in every measure. The Associate Dean will create and maintain a repository of common
processes, policies, forms, and documents to ensure availability to faculty, staff, and students, and will facilitate a systematic review of
all College policies, forms, and documents towards the goals of modernizing and streamlining processes. The Honors College Associate Dean is
always a representative of the Honors College to the University and community, so may participate in Advancement or civic engagement events,
and represents the Dean in her absence.
Additionally, as a leader of an academic college at a top Texas Research 1 institution, the
Associate Dean will maintain a research portfolio commensurate with rank, and as a leader of an Honors College which prioritizes stellar
pedagogy, the Associate Dean will teach at least one course per annum. The Associate Dean will be a consummate University and decanal
partner, will exercise sound judgment and discretion, and will engage in regular professional development activities.
Required
Qualifications
- An earned terminal degree in an academic discipline
- Teaching and research accomplishments commensurate
with tenure at an R1 institution - Record of distinction in undergraduate teaching and mentoring
- Progressively responsible
managerial experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent
interpersonal skills - Teaching and research accomplishments at the rank of full professor, in a field that augments the strengths of
current Texas Tech Honors College faculty - Previous experience in mentoring undergraduate research
- Engagement in
interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary scholarship, teaching and/or service - Previous honors education teaching and/or mentorship
