B.PROC/LLB (NQF 7)
7 years’ relevant experience, of which 3 years must be in middle management and in the legal discipline. Professional Registration Admission as Attorney/ Advocate

Primary Function:

The fundamental aim of this position is to deliver professional, precise, and reliable legal counsel to the business, thereby reducing potential legal risks that the business might encounter in its day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide expert and strategic legal advice to management on various complex matters, ensuring that all advice given mitigates risk and supports City Power’s business goals.
Assist in formulating and implementing City Power policies, ensuring they align with current laws and regulations.
Development of strategy and principle to Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents to safeguard the organisation’s full legal rights. This could include employment contracts, supplier agreements, customer contracts, partnership agreements, and more.
Ensure City Power is in compliance with all current laws and regulations relevant to its operations, including corporate governance, employment laws, data protection, intellectual property, etc.
Provie strategic direction in Identifying and analysing potential legal risks and implications, guide management in decision-making from a legal perspective, and propose actions to mitigate identified risks.
Oversee the resolution of legal disputes, which may involve managing litigation, negotiating with third parties, or working closely with external counsel.
Liaise with relevant regulatory bodies and represent City Power in any legal proceedings.
Develop policies, procedures, and standards that regulate the key aspects for which the department is responsible. Ensure appropriate assurances are applied to monitor compliance with these policies, procedures, and standards.
Provide strategic direction for the provision of competent legal advice and services, anticipating and evaluating potential legal problems.
Collaborate with various Groups within City Power, supporting the development of business contracts and interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations. Prepare legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, initial and amended articles of incorporation.
Identify potential legal implications, opportunities, and risks under the laws in which City Power conducts its business and advise management appropriately. Formulate legal strategies for cases filed by/against City Power to safeguard interests effectively and fulfil legal obligations.
Ensure timely submission of relevant documents and returns to external stakeholders/regulatory authorities.
Represent City Power for resolution of any legal issue or escalation and ensure compliance of all legal documents with the relevant legal framework.
Research and evaluate different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations. Review documentation before submission to the General Manager’s office.
Manage the resources of the department/division effectively and lead cost control activities to maximise efficiency.
Represent the department/division at various forums and confidently raise issues at the appropriate governance structures.
Train and guide City Power staff on legal matters, company policies, risk management, and compliance. This role may also involve managing a team of junior legal professionals.
Continually stay updated with changes in laws and regulations that affect City Power and industry.
