Department Description

The Office of Educational Opportunity and Enrichment Services houses a family of programs, services and centers designed to support student learning, enhance the student experience, and foster strong communities where students feel empowered to achieve their goals. Transition assistance, support services and co-curricular opportunities are offered to all students along with specialized support geared toward various diverse student communities. Programs and centers include The Aggie Compass, First-year Aggie Connections (FYAC), Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Guardian Scholars Program (GSP), Davis Underground Scholars Program (DUSP), Success Coaching and Learning Strategies, Mentorship for Undergraduate Research in Agriculture, Letters and Science (MURALS), Transfer Reentry Center (TRC), TRiO Scholars Program, Veterans Success Center (VSC) and Pre-Graduate/Law Advising. The department employs over 80 students as peer advisors and mentors, coaches, and program assistants.

Job Summary

Under general supervision by the Director of the Centers for Opportunity Scholar Success, this position will establish, direct and lead the Davis Underground Scholars Program (DUSP). The program will support students who were formerly incarcerated or impacted by incarceration. The DUSP Director is responsible for utilizing culturally competent frameworks to support the academic success and personal well-being of students who identify as formerly incarcerated and/or impacted by incarceration. This work will be carried out through the development, implementation and assessment of resources, activities, services, and programs for the larger communities, as well as provide individualized support to students impacted by incarceration from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and with other intersecting identities. This role will serve as the campus wide expert for formerly incarcerated students and/or students impacted by incarceration, including advising senior management and representing the university at state and regional meetings.

$66,600.00/yr. – $125,800.00/yr. (Department budgeted salary range: $6,783.33/mo. – $6,987.25/mo. Commensurate with experience.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • Experience in a relevant professional field in higher education/student affairs, non-profit, counseling, or other sectors working on addressing issues of incarceration.
  • Advanced experience working with diverse cultural backgrounds and sensitivity to social, educational, and cultural needs and concerns of first generation, economically challenged, and underrepresented ethnic student communities.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • High degree of knowledge of persistence trends and the issues that impact the student success of students with incarceration experience.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills to recognize situations requiring specialized attention and handle difficult, sensitive, and/or confidential issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of motivation, negotiation, conflict resolution, team building, interpersonal communication, and consensus building; skills to apply these techniques to facilitate desired outcomes in working relationships with culturally diverse students, staff and faculty.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate meetings prepare and deliver professional presentations and convey complex ideas to diverse audiences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Advanced degree from an accredited institution in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Public Health or a related field.
  • Experience with grant application and budget management
  • Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling, and analyzing data and generating reports.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and demonstrated experience planning and administering support and retention strategies, organizational change processes and leadership development programs.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Supervisory skills to recruit, select, train, assign, motivate, and evaluate staff.
  • Excellent writing skills to compose and edit correspondence, reports, and published materials. Ability to effectively write and manage funding grants.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate meetings prepare and deliver professional presentations and convey complex ideas to diverse audiences.
