Job Description Summary

The Academic Advisor/Athletics Coordinator will coordinate the overall academic advising, academic support services, eligibility requirements and progress monitoring for all student-athletes. This position will monitor and enhance academic progress towards retention and degree completion.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience as collegiate athlete, preferably at the community college level

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with athletics department at the collegiate level
  • Minimum one year of advising experience or one year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

Other Information

Academic Advisor

  • Oversees, plans, organizes, and administers academic advising and academic support for all student-athletes
  • Provide advising and registration at new student orientation and during registration periods for all incoming and returning student-athletes
  • Inform students of the types of programs available at SMC and explain their purposes, job outlook, and curriculum
  • Develop Degree Plans according to student’s academic and life goals in order to keep student-athletes on track for graduation and in sequence according to their published curriculum
  • Identify required placement exams and interpret scores; inform students of alternative credit and test out options; review prior coursework to determine eligibility for course waivers and submit waivers as necessary
  • Run and interpret degree audits to verify academic progress and degree completion
  • Assist students with navigating the published Schedule of Classes and selecting courses appropriate to their degree and transfer goals
  • Assist students with schedule adjustments and the withdrawal process, in coordination with athletic director and coaches
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication with academic deans, and the records office regarding scheduling issues, overrides, and curriculum variances
  • Provide effective tools and resources to students who experience difficulties maintaining a positive academic experience
  • Initiate collaborative efforts with other advisors as a team to anticipate and respond to advising challenges and opportunities as they arise
  • Explain the Michigan Transfer Agreement, its goals, and its benefits to those transferring to a four-year school in Michigan
  • Assist students with selecting an appropriate transfer school in accordance with their academic goals and personal preferences
  • Help students navigate transfer resources – transfer guides, articulation agreements, application process, transfer scholarships, etc.
  • Assist students with transfer application process and provide recommendations, as requested
  • Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with faculty and various campus partners including athletics, academic advising, career services, campus life, and financial aid
  • Research transfer equivalencies at students’ prospective transfer school(s) to ensure they are maximizing their time at SMC and taking courses required for transfer

Athletics Coordinator

  • Oversees, plans, organizes, administers, and directs the academic support services for student-athletes in order to maintain national, conference, and institutional eligibility
  • Provides direction, counsel, and mentorship to student-athletes for specific issues impacting academic success and direction; meets regularly with student-athletes to address issues such as academic performance, time management, goal setting, career planning, learning and study strategies, test taking, note taking, and other skills necessary for academic success.
  • Supervises the coordination of study tables
  • Serves as liaison and advocate regarding academic issues for student-athletes and college constituents
  • Meets with prospective student-athletes and families during official and unofficial visits to campus and inform on academic policies and support services. For prospective transfer student-athletes, creates program completion plan to determine transfer credit and time remaining for eligibility and program completion.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of events, programs, and resources that support student-athletes, particularly related to life skills and their overall growth and development

The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
