The College of Nursing at Xavier University is seeking a talented candidate for the position of Academic Advisor with a specific focus on first-year and at-risk nursing student populations.  The successful candidate will serve as a professional advisor in the student success model and collaborate with success coaches, financial aid officers, and faculty to help undergraduate nursing students meet their academic and career goals. This position will report to the College of Nursing Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide individualized academic advising to current and prospective nursing students with specific emphasis on first- and second-year students.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean team with registration, add/drop, change of major/minor, waitlist, and override processes.
  • Develop required workshops/training for freshmen prior to fall and spring advising; Ensure students understand their Degree Works (degree audit); and Review BSN curriculum plan and progression policies.
  • Communicate campus resources to support and enhance student success (Open lab time, Disability Services, Center for Student Success, Writing Center, Math Lab, Health & Counseling, Career Development, etc.).
  • Monitor freshman midterm and final grades and summer course repeats for progression and assists in end-of-semester letters.
  • Encourage students to engage in experiential learning that enhances their academic and career goals.  Guide students on how activities such as internships, study abroad, etc. can fit into their four-year plan.
  • Work directly with university departments (Registrar’s Office, Bursar, Student Success Center, Accessibility and Disability Services, Financial Aid, Mentoring Program, Health & Wellness/McGrath, TRIO, Athletics, etc.) and Deans to assist students with day-to-day issues related to registration, degree completion or academic success.
  • Identify and communicate with at-risk students based on mid-term and end-of-semester grades; develop outreach strategies and referrals and monitor their progress.
  • Counsel at-risk students on class selection, academic majors and minors, study skills, time management, course sequencing and more.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as nursing, education, or other relevant area with experience.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience with experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Ability to engage and interact with people and college students.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions and a high degree of confidentiality.
