Job Description

The Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an innovative, highly motivated, and culturally adaptable Academic Advisor to join our team! Reporting to the Director of Advising, you will be responsible for providing academic advising and community building activities to students enrolled in humanities programs in Dietrich. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to an interesting and challenging work environment.

Core Responsibilities Include:

  • Advise students in history, philosophy, and modern languages programs.
  • Provide individualized advising to guide students to fulfillment of major and general education degree requirements and exploration of experiential learning opportunities (study abroad, research, internships, etc)
  • Closely monitor academic progress toward major & minor degree completion. Guides advisees in setting personal goals. Performs administrative tasks related to advising
  • Certifies degrees, additional majors, and minors for graduates
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the first year advising center and the history, philosophy, and modern languages departments
  • Facilitates a sense of belonging for students within Dietrich and the humanities departments
  • Participate in all prospective student events to promote the Humanities@CMU initiative
  • Collaborates with the Humanities Scholars Program to raise the profile of the Humanities at CMU
  • Manages complex student cases and engages with multiple student affairs offices as needed for students in crisis or with complex questions. Works with college leadership on student cases that are unique.
  • Liaises with other resources on campus to provide holistic support for students
  • Serves on university and college-wide committees
  • Attends all meetings involving college & university advisors

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
  • 3 years of relevant experience required
