Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences (FBNS) seeks applications from highly qualified professionals for the position of Nutrition Academic Advisor. The successful candidate is expected to work with the departmental advising team to advise students regarding the requirements for the Nutrition Science undergraduate curricula, monitor their progress toward fulfillment of the requirements for the baccalaureate degree, and guide them as they explore career options. The individual will also be expected to lead recruitment efforts for all three undergraduate majors within the department (Food Science, Bioprocessing Science, and Nutrition Science). Additionally, they will create, manage, and grow two initiatives within the department: an ambassador program and a mentorship program. The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds within a university setting.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Advise assigned undergraduate Nutrition Science majors regarding curricula requirements, monitor their progress toward fulfillment of the requirements for the baccalaureate degree, and guide them as they explore career options.
  • Become familiar with and maintain current knowledge of the requirements of all FBNS undergraduate curricula and their career opportunities.
  • Lead departmental recruiting of undergraduate students in all three majors – Food Science, Bioprocessing Science, and Nutrition Science – including university and college-initiated recruitment activities and manage tour requests from prospective students and high school representatives.
  • Launch, manage, and grow the undergraduate FBNS Ambassador program, whose members will assist with recruitment, orientation, and graduation activities.
  • Launch, manage, and grow the FBNS Mentors program, which will connect current undergraduate students with departmental alumni.
  • Become knowledgeable about and main current knowledge regarding student-support services within the college and across campus.
  • Develop and maintain an active leadership role in the University advising community and national advising organizations by participating in workshops and gaining relevant certifications.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students from the department, college, and university by serving on committees and in other capacities related to advising, recruitment, graduation, and student success.
  • Some travel required for recruitment activities.
  • Some evening and weekend work is required.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Required Qualifications:

  • Coursework in nutrition science, dietetics, public health, or a related field.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in academic advising or student services in higher education.

Required license or certification:

  • Must have valid driver’s license.
