Job Description

Job Summary:
The Academic Advisor I delivers individual and group academic advisement to current and prospective new students at UT Arlington. AAI’s provide professional advisement through an assigned student caseload offering guidance and information to supplement and enhance the academic experience, student retention and completion.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide proactive holistic advising to current and prospective students.
  • Advise students concerning course selection and degree requirements utilizing multiple modalities (i.e. in-person, virtual, large and small group, phone, and email).
  • Teach students how to track academic progress and develop academic plans, locate and interpret appropriate policies, and to utilize available tools and resources.
  • Conduct verification of degree progress, removal of holds, and processing of various forms to ensure timely student progression, etc.
  • Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts, and placement results.
  • Monitor the academic progress of assigned caseload to provide students with just-in-time assistance.
  • Enter advising notes into MyMav following best practices for documenting student appointments/contacts.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in support of assigned caseload.
  • AAI’s serve on working groups/committees charged with specific objectives aligned with departmental, divisional, and institutional goals.
  • AAI’s liaise with campus partners such as departmental advisors, Texas Success Initiative (TSI), admissions, etc.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of all applicable federal, state, and University policies and procedures.
  • Keep informed of relevant academic programs and support services such as counseling and tutoring within a College and University and provide appropriate referrals to students.

  • Participate in campus events (such as New Maverick Orientation), advising meetings, professional conferences, and individual professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Skill in written and verbal interpersonal communication; organizing information; problem solving; adhering to deadlines and time management; taking initiative; outreach; and navigating student information systems.
  • Ability to work professionally, collaboratively, and independently; and proficiently use Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint.
  • A working knowledge and ability to use the University Catalog is essential.
  • Experience delivering services that promote inclusive student success at the collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working collaboratively with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • One (1) year of experience working with college students or adolescents in an advising capacity or the equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures governing academic advising functions; and resources provided by academic advising associations such as NACADA and TEXAAN.
