College of Sciences Advising Services:

The College of Sciences Advising Services office provides academic assistance to undergraduate students within the College of Sciences. We strive to efficiently and professionally advise and serve students and the public with clear communication, concerned care, and creative solutions to problems while offering an inclusive and welcoming environment. We help students with matters concerning college and university requirements, policies, and procedures. Students use our services primarily by walk-in or by appointment for advising services and special problems.

The Opportunity:

The University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Sciences Advising Services (COSAS) is seeking qualified candidates for an Academic Advisor II position. The Academic Advisor II will oversee the academic advising of undergraduate majors within the College of Sciences in support of the College and University goals regarding orientation, transitional support, enrollment, retention, persistence, progression, and graduation. COSAS advisors are required to have a broad knowledge of all COS programs and gain deeper knowledge over time. They generally follow a holistic, appreciative advising approach though other approaches may be used if more beneficial to the student (e.g., prescriptive advising for students on academic probation). The Academic Advisor II will work with varied student populations (e.g., FTIC, Transfers, at risk) and advise primarily by way of outreach campaigns, student-initiated appointments, orientations, and “walk-in” services. While having guidance and support from mentors and supervisors, they will carry out their responsibilities autonomously. The Academic Advisor II will be given limited administrative duties and will mentor new Academic Advisor I hires who have no advising experience. The Academic Advisor II may be assigned to work with special, high-risk populations as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide both in-person and virtual (e.g., Zoom, phone, email) academic advising to undergrad COS majors following a developmental and appreciative advising process.Includes assessing students’ individual needs (academic, career, and personal) that may impact their success and providing assistance or referral as is appropriate/required. Includes targeted advising campaigns.Works with special, high-risk populations as assigned.

  • Assist COS majors with developing a timely and efficient academic plan customized as appropriate to their needs. Provide goal setting and motivation and suggest engagement/co-curricular opportunities for students in assigned cohorts. Monitor progress towards four-year graduation for students in the assigned cohort. Refer advisees to resource specialists as needed.

  • Advise new COS students at both FTIC and transfer orientations and establish relationships with new advisees as primary academic contact, especially during the transition period.

  • Assist “walk-in” students through the virtual or in-person front office.Includes non-COS majors needing help with registration, course evaluations, or course prerequisites.

  • Teach students how to navigate the myUCF student portal and find critical information (e.g., historical records, current grades, holds, academic standing, assigned advisor) and use various tools such as myKnight audit, Pegasus Path, and Schedule Builder.

  • Integrate career development concepts and strategies into the developmental advising process and assists students with developing awareness and identifying strengths and weaknesses in the process.

  • Maintain student records and document student interaction in myKnight Star and other systems as appropriate. Use advising tools and technology fully to manage advising and student communication. Track and report as required.

  • Mentor new academic advisors (Advisor 1 level) and student peer advisors, especially during the training period.

  • Perform limited administrative duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic advising experience in a college/university setting following a developmental and appreciative advising process.

  • Experience in positions requiring professionalism and personal accountability of work responsibilities.

  • Experience advising students with academic difficulties.

  • Career advising experience.

  • Experience working in a team setting.

  • Familiarity with Peoplesoft Campus Solutions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work well within a team as well as independently.

  • Ability to learn new computer applications.

Work Schedule

Normally 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Remote 2 days a week. During the Fall and Spring semesters, hours for one of those remote days will be 10:30 AM – 7:00 PM in Occasional evening or weekend hours during peak times or special events.
