Job
Summary
- Under direction, advises students on University policy and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related
academic matters. Fosters student success by carrying out academic advising activities and protocols to help students stay on track to
fulfill their educational goals. Assists with student orientation and registration. Directs students to appropriate resources and support
services.
Job Duties:
- Advises and counsels students for Fall, Spring, and Summer course selections; analyzes student
records in preparation for orientation and advising appointments. - Provides guidance to students about their educational goals and
empowers students to take initiative regarding curriculum planning, registration, university policies, etc. - Provides individual
attention to students to enhance student retention and academic success, including planning for graduation, major changes, academic standing
and probation, and support for at-risk student populations. - Interacts collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure a coordinated
effort to advise and support students. - Receives and gives referrals to and from faculty and other University offices for students’
major considerations, academic issues, or personal concerns. - Carries out established protocols for maintaining records of student
information, documents, curriculum plans, advising communication, and referrals. - Participates in office staff development,
workshops, programs, and administrative functions; attends meetings; performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of University policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources, student life, and support
services. - Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international
students. - Interpersonal/human relations skills.
- Ability to encourage and empower students to make their own
decisions. - Ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the University.
- Ability to identify students’ needs for
support services in order to make appropriate referrals. - Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work a flexible
schedule. - Knowledge of student information systems.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree minimum,
supplemented with at least one year related experience in higher education. Master’s degree
preferred.
