Definition of Class

The Center of
Community Engagement (CCE) in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DCE) at the University of Mississippi seeks a dynamic and
equity-minded professional for the position of Academic Mentor – Student Leadership and Success. We seek an individual committed to the work
of fulfilling the University of Mississippi’s public mission by advancing and institutionalizing community engagement and student
success.

This incumbent supports the Assistant Director of Student Programs by providing academic mentoring, program management, and
leadership development to promote student success through student leadership programs in the Center for Community Engagement. Specifically,
the Academic Mentor of Student Leadership and Success will manage the first year and sophomore year experience in the UM Bonner Leaders
Program. A four-year, cohort-model, student leadership program, UM Bonner Leaders join a national coalition of 70+ colleges and universities
who, through the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, seek to “transform students, campuses, and communities through service.”

In addition to supporting student success and development in the UM Bonner
Leaders Program, the Academic Mentor will manage the inaugural Chancellor’s Servant Leadership Fellowship in partnership with the Algernon
Sullivan Foundation. Support will also be provided to the UM Voting Engagement Ambassadors, a small team of student workers in the Center
for Community Engagement who educate the UM student body on nonpartisan voting resources and initiatives.

This position provides
academic mentoring and program management to support student success. The incumbent conducts one-on-one mentoring sessions with students;
advises students regarding academic barriers; monitors and tracks student academic progress; coordinates student leadership and community
service programs; teaches two, one-hour courses per semester related to the social change model of leadership development, student
persistence, and academic success; conducts workshops and presentations; and serves as a liaison to parents, students, faculty, and
counselors.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Manages first and sophomore year experience in the UM Bonner
    Leaders Program.
  • Serves as lead instructor for Bonner Community Engaged Learning (CEL) 101, 102, 201 and 202 courses. Classes meet
    weekly for one hour; 101 and 201 are held in the fall semester; 102 and 202 occur in the spring.
  • Works with Assistant Director to
    refine existing curriculum based on student and program needs.
  • Manages Blackboard portals for each CEL course. Plans and executes
    lessons and class activities. Creates and grades all assignments.
  • Monitors class attendance and participation. Follows up with
    students whose attendance and/or participation jeopardizes their success.
  • Facilitates one-on-one mentoring sessions with first year
    and sophomore Bonners and Chancellor’s Fellows students to enhance educational and leadership development.
  • Advises students
    regarding strategies for academic success, academic barriers, and available university support services. Monitors student attendance and
    academic progress. Compiles student data into reports for divisional leadership.
  • Communicates with parents, families, and/ or
    supporters as needed and in accordance with FERPA regarding student progress.
  • Serves as a resource for faculty and staff in matters
    related to academic and student success. Acts as a liaison between students, faculty, and professional schools. Refers students to campus
    resources such as Counseling Center and Career Services, as needed.
  • Plans, organizes, and attends Bonner Cornerstone Activities,
    including All Bonner Meetings, All Bonner Fall Retreat, First Year Trip, and Sophomore Exchange Trip.
  • Creates assessment surveys of
    Bonner Cornerstone Activities to capture feedback for program improvement.
  • Assists in recruitment efforts of prospective Bonner
    Leaders, including mailed materials, email campaigns, and other digital outreach methods.
  • Participates in interviews and selection
    of new, incoming Bonner Leaders cohort.
  • Leads on-boarding efforts for new Bonner Leaders cohort by organizing Bonner Orientation and
    supporting internship placements.
  • Manages Chancellor’s Servant Leadership Fellowship, a new student leadership and service program
    for underrepresented students at the University of Mississippi. Oversees recruitment, selection, training, and mentoring of inaugural cohort
    of five Leadership Fellows.
  • Works closely with Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, a key partner with the Chancellor’s Servant
    Leadership Fellowship, to track student development and learning.
  • Assists Assistant Director of Student Leadership Programs in
    supporting five Voting Engagement Ambassadors. Attends meetings, assists with programming, and contributes to student
    development.
  • Responsible to respond directly to individual and groups of students, prospective students, and community partners
    regarding their questions related to programs’ expectations, benefits, and costs; information in the curriculum; campus and community
    resources; the student’s development; the program’s development; and upcoming responsibilities and opportunities.
  • Must effectively
    communicate with diverse audiences, with a special emphasis on listening to understand.
  • Collects and analyzes data, decides needed
    program revisions, and implements changes for continuous program improvement.

Essential
Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may
be identified and included by the hiring department.

  1. Serves as a mentor and conducts individualized sessions with assigned
    students.
  2. Monitors student attendance and academic progress.
  3. Plans, develops and implements various student persistence and
    academic success programs.
  4. Serves as liaison to students, parents, and counselors.
  5. Teaches two, one-hour courses per
    semester related to student persistence and academic success.

Minimum
Education/Experience

Education:
Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Education, Psychology, Counseling, Liberal
Arts, or a related field from an accredited university or college.

AND

Experience:
One (1) year of experience related to
the above described duties.
