Position Summary

As an Academic Support Coach, you will be part of a dedicated team of Access and Disability Services professionalswho work together to provide exceptional service and support to students who have disabilities, are English LanguageLearners, and/or face other barriers to education at McHenry County College ( MCC). Through one-on-one coachingsessions, you will help students adjust successfully to the demands of college, provide students with guidance andpractice in developing skills related to academic success, and assist students in determining school and personal goals,and the action steps for achieving those goals. You will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and community partners.You will also assist with Department and College initiatives, such as educating the campus community about Diversity,Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion (DEBI) topics and creating tools, programs, and workshops to support student success.The Academic Support Coach will align with MCC’s mission, vision, and goals(https://www.mchenry.edu/aboutmcc/collegemission.html), while embodying the values of inspiration, connectedness,diversity, thoughtfulness, community focus, excellence, passion, and stewardship.

Provide ongoing, individual support and tutoring to students who have disabilities, are English Language Learners,and/or face other barriers to education. Develop programming for these students to develop critical skills for academic,personal, and social success. Connect students to resources that meet their specific needs, provide advocacy and helpin working with faculty and staff and in navigating the campus community, and encourage the development of studentcoping skills, resiliency, self-advocacy, and language skills.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing case management, follow-up, and support to students registered with Access & Disability Services seeking study and learning skills
  • Mentor students through intrusive relationships and monitor student progress toward goals, intervening as necessary
  • Engage with students to help improve time management, note-taking, concentration, test-preparation, productivity, and help students develop their own personal learning strategies 
  • Coach students for improved management of the aspects of their disabilities that interfere with their abilities to be successful academically, personally, and socially (i.e.- problem solving, self-regulation, etc..)
  • Create programs and workshops that enhances the leadership, self-advocacy, and interpersonal skills of students with disabilities. 
  • Work collaboratively with other departments on campus to create opportunities for educational training and programming to create a more inclusive and accessible campus environment for students with disabilities. 
  • Works with academic and student affairs departments in providing appropriate referrals for the overall success of a student.
  • Educate the campus community on the Universal Design for Learning philosophy to ensure educational programming and courses are readily accessible for students with disabilities. 
  • Support the facilitation of appropriate student accommodations and services, such as test reading, tutoring, and coaching
  • Develop appropriate education plans and advise students on selection of courses, primarily for students registered with Access & Disability Services
  • Assist with the facilitation of New Student Orientation by presenting college information and advising students
  • Maintain appropriate, accurate records and case notes in a timely manner
  • Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Directly related experience working with or teaching individuals who have disabilities
