Princeton University

Overview

The Office of Health Professions Advising (HPA) at Princeton University supports a diverse population of 1000+ students and alums preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, public health, and other healthcare fields. As Princeton diversifies its student body, HPA has collaborated closely with the Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Inclusion (EBCAO) to ensure that first-generation, low-income (FLI) students and others from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in health professions are well supported.

We seek a Health Professions Adviser who will work primarily with first-year and sophomore students to facilitate their transition to Princeton and preparation as future health professionals, who is passionate about supporting FLI and underrepresented students.

Through individual and group advising, programming, and developing educational resources, the HPA Adviser will guide students in their academic and co-curricular choices; monitor students’ progress through the premed/prehealth experience; help students understand the diverse opportunities within health professions; and refer students to other resources on campus, as appropriate. The Adviser will collaborate with a broader advising team within the Office of the Dean of the College, including faculty advisers and professional staff in the residential colleges, and the EBCAO team. During the summer, the Adviser will provide support for FLI/underrepresented students in initiatives such as the Freshman Scholars Institute, Scholars Institute Fellows Program, and sophomore early assurance medical school programs. The Adviser may also support applicants to health professions schools through tasks including personal statement review and interview preparation.

The position is suitable for an entry-level professional with an interest in student advising, health professions advising, or higher education administration. Application review begins immediately. Please include a cover letter with your application materials. The ideal candidate will start prior to the beginning of the fall term (late August).

    • Create and support existing initiatives that support students who are first-generation college goers, from low-income backgrounds, or from communities otherwise historically underrepresented in the health professions.
    • Develop awareness of the diversity of opportunities in health-related professions and work with students to consider which paths may be most aligned with their values, abilities and interests, including health-related careers outside of medicine.
    • In partnership with the Assistant Director and residential college deans, recruit, select, and train a cohort of HPA peer advisers and prehealth student-athlete peer advisers (“Jock Docs”).
    • Assist in supporting 100-130 Princeton students and alumni applying to health professions schools annually, including providing essay review and interview preparation.

    • Serve as the primary coordinator of HPA events during the Academic Expo (orientation advising fair), Family Weekend, and Princeton Previews (admitted student open house days). Assist with planning and participate in Princeton Reunions events.
  • Student Organization Support (10%)
    • Maintain communication with and provide guidance for health-related student organizations.
