Job Summary/Basic Function

Provide comprehensive proactive academic advising for pre-health students pursuing career paths in health professions. Work closely with academic advising to facilitate student academic success, retention, and timely movement to degree while assisting students with adjustments and decisions about fields of study, curricular and course selections, career opportunities, and academic and administrative procedures, policies and services.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree by date of employment and have experience in collegiate advising, academic counseling, or student affairs (internships and practica are acceptable experience).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in academic or career advising. Experience working with careers in the STEMM field. General knowledge of the health professions admission guidelines and processes. Excellent organizational, time management and interpersonal skills. Experience working with diverse student populations; experience working collaboratively with large groups; experience with university computer systems or similar computer technologies, i.e. BANNER Admin, DARS, EAB-Navigate; excellent written and oral communication skills. must work collaboratively with a team on issues of student success and have an understanding of student retention.

Essential Functions and percent of time

Advising/Coaching. (Undergraduate, Graduate, Alumni). Conduct advising appointments with students enrolled in the post-bac certificate and pre-health major programs. Work with primary academic advisors to ensure timely progress to degree while meeting professional school admission requirements. (50%)

Outreach & Relationship Development. Assist director in building external relationships with school counselors, admission representatives, alumni and university colleagues. Foster professional school relations. Develop and maintain active community and student mentoring program. Coordinate and organize volunteer/service and job shadowing opportunities or for students. (20%)

Essential Functions and percent of time (cont’d)

Teaching. Teach SM 1000 (Introduction to Health Professions) for incoming students (including honors) and SM 3000 (Preparing for Careers in Health Care) for students preparing for the application cycle. (15%)

Participate in developing program strategic plan with Director, including program assessment and budget planning. (10%)

Other duties as assigned (5%)
