Job Description
Rhode Island College invites applicants for the position of Advisor, Upward Bound Program. This is a full-time, calendar year, temporary,
renewable contingent upon funding position.
Serve as an academic advisor for high school students who are from low-income backgrounds
and who may be among the first in their families to attend a four-year college. Provide personal adjustment and motivational counseling,
academic, career, and educational counseling, and guidance and assistance in completing the college and financial aid application processes.
The advisor is responsible for effectively implementing and achieving goals, objectives, and standards associated with the Upward Bound
Program as outlined by the US Department of Education. The advisor will work closely with high school faculty, guidance counselors, college
campus, and community agency personnel.
The Center for Scholar Development is the home to the four campus TRIO programs:
Upward Bound, Student Support Services-Regular, Student Support Services-STEM, the McNair Scholars; and the college Preparatory Enrollment
Program. The mission of the CSD department is to support educational pathways in an affirming environment for first-generation
scholars in their pursuit of post-secondary success.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s
degree in Psychology, Secondary Education, Human Development, or a related field. - Two years full-time experience
counseling/advising adolescents like those identified for services (low-income, potential first-generation, at-risk college-bound students) - Prior work experience coordinating educations programs for urban youth.
- Excellent organizational skills; strong verbal
and written communication skills. - Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-performing team environment.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services, or Education.
- Knowledge of TRIO Programs
- Knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
