JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Assistant Director for Gender Equity and Sexuality in the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education (ODIME) is primarily responsible for the coordination, implementation, and assessment of campus gender equity, women’s programs, and LGBTQIAP+ programs, services, and initiatives. This position shall provide leadership and strategy to advance the needs of the LGBTQIAP+ student population to ensure their continued recruitment, retention, and success at WPI. This position shall also advance gender equity and women’s programs by creating learning experiences and initiatives to promote historically underrepresented populations in STEM. This position also maintains and enhances educational, social, cultural, professional, referral, and support resources for students regarding issues of sexual and gender identity and identity development. This position will work collaboratively with the Director and the ODIME team to advance the mission of the ODIME to foster an inclusive campus community which respects, honors, and celebrates diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in all its dimensions. The Assistant Director for Gender Equity and Sexuality is a staff member in the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education (ODIME) and reports directly to the Director of Multicultural Education and Community Engagement.

The salary range for this position is $53,000 – $58,000 and includes flexible work arrangements.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities:

  • The Assistant Director assists with the administration of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education (ODIME) and is responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of programs and support services specifically for underrepresented students included but not limited to students who are underrepresented BIPOC/ALANA, first-generation college, low-income, LBGTQIAP+, women, international students, and students from a variety of religious backgrounds, and for all undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Lead and oversee all aspects in the planning, coordination, execution, and assessment of campus LGBTQIAP+ programs, services, and initiatives.
  • Lead and oversee gender equity initiatives to ensure advocacy of historically marginalized identities in STEM including, but not limited to: women, non-binary, and other genders.
  • Lead the design and implementation of gender equity, women’s leadership, and training efforts to inform undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on the concepts of feminism/womanism, social justice, oppression, and intersectionality.
  • Lead efforts that celebrate the contributions of women to society and culture by providing educational programs and activities that expose students to information about women’s lives, achievements, and contributions.
  • Offer resources and knowledge of men and masculinity topics including but not limited to: intersectionality, men’s health and wellbeing, male privilege, patriarchy, misogyny, toxic masculinity, gender-based violence prevention, etc.
  • Offer support and advocacy for students regarding sensitive personal issues, identity development, academic success, and career-related topics.
  • Provide strategic vision and continual support of educational programming which raises awareness and address issues of concern to LGBTQIAP+ students on campus.
  • Serve as a content expert, staff liaison, campus support, and advisor to undergraduate and graduate student organizations supporting LGBTQIAP+ students.

  • Design, implement, facilitate, and assess training and other learning experiences related to LGBTQIAP+ identities, sexuality, gender, women, and other topics for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Coordinate with the ODIME team, campus affinity groups, and local partners to organize and lead cultural and educational programs which honor, celebrate, and/or raise awareness about LGBTQIAP+ identity.
  • Coordinate with the ODIME team, campus affinity groups, and local partners to organize and lead small group opportunities, reflection spaces, discussion groups, and intergroup dialogues.
  • Enhance campus LGBTQIAP+ resources by assisting the University in identifying community resources, educational resources, online tools, training, conferences, workshops, and courses to advance both the LGBTQIAP+ identity of students and promote cultural competency.
  • Conduct surveys, program evaluations, and other forms of assessment to aid in effective appropriation of resources, programs, and services for gender and sexuality resources.
  • Assist in research, advocacy and development of affirming and equitable policies and practices that have implications regarding gender and sex discrimination.
  • Assist in leading and supporting ODIME support networks and mentoring groups in collaboration with the Division of Talent and Inclusion and campus partners.
  • Develop a network of partnerships with community agencies and local organizations in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Support campus wellness and mindfulness initiatives to promote mental health awareness and self-care.
  • Facilitate key student leadership efforts, advisory boards, and committees to support the office’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.
  • In consultation with the Director of Multicultural Education and Community Engagement, the Assistant Director shall participate in campus ceremonies and celebrations including, but not limited to: Pride Month, Connections Pre-Orientation Program, Queer and Trans Connections, New Student Orientation, Convocation, Homecoming, LGBTQIAP+ History Month, National Coming Out Day, International Pronoun Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance, World AIDS Day, Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day, and Commencement exercises.
  • Assist in leading campus and community efforts around civic engagement, voter education, and voter registration for all students.
  • Provide strategic vision and continual support of educational opportunities and other learning experiences which addresses issues of concern to students from diverse backgrounds in STEM and helps to raise awareness of issues impacting underrepresented students in STEM, such as lectures, workshops, and professional development seminars for both graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Assist in developing, coordinating, implementing, and assessing programming and other learning experiences throughout the academic year and summer months which can address a wide variety of audiences focused on spreading awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, access, and social justice topics.
  • Assist in leading campus and community implementation and coordination of campus-wide events, programs, and services in celebration of all ethnic/racial/cultural affinity heritage months, religious holidays, awareness days, and commemorative days.
  • Assist in leading campus and community efforts around civic engagement, voter education, and voter registration for all students.
  • Support the Director’s efforts tied to the ALANA Support Network.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other campus offices and departments to ensure high quality services for students.
  • Assist with the coordination and some logistical components and chaperones travel to assigned national and local student leadership conferences.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees that advocate for diverse populations to foster an inclusive campus community.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and supervising of undergraduate student staff and graduate assistants as needed, including providing specific supervision the variety of student workers within the department.
  • Under the leadership of the Director, and in coordination with campus wide assessment teams, conduct regular program assessments to determine the effectiveness of programs and align the learning outcomes with student needs.
  • In collaboration with the Director, develop and disseminate annual report reviewing key initiatives, effectiveness, recommendations, and future objectives as they relate to the support of diverse student populations at WPI.
  • Maintain and update departmental databases and share drives.
  • Maintain and update the office’s various houses, identity centers, and spaces to ensure proper cleanliness, health, and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accreditation program in STEM, higher education, counseling studies, gender/sexuality studies, cultural studies, leadership, business, social sciences, or related field. Master’s degree in related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2+ years’ experience in higher education and experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion work for diverse student populations.
  • Experience working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, asexual, aromantic, agender and pansexual students in higher education.
  • Experience working with women, non-binary, and other genders in higher education.
  • Experience working with students in STEM disciplines highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience with recruitment and retention of diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the development of collaborative programming at an institution of higher education.
  • Record of success in establishing good working relationships with students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and other stakeholders is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated record of involvement and leadership in professional organizations, especially within higher education.
  • Excellent written and oral communication required.
  • Strong organizational skills.
