Accountability: The Assistant Director of Athletic Bands reports to the Director of Athletic Bands.
The University Marching Band serves as an integral part of campus life at Mississippi Valley State University. Referred to as “The Mean Green Marching Machine,” the Marching Band performs at all home football games and halftime shows. In addition to football games, the band performs at university and community events, as well as receiving personal invitations to various marching band parades, competitions, and exhibitions. The University Pep Band performs at various athletic events at the request of the Athletics Department.
General Statement of Duties (Band Operations): The Assistant Director of Athletic Bands is responsible for arranging music, field show design, and recruiting music while supporting the various band activities in collaboration with the Director of Athletic Bands. This position oversees, manages, and executes the operations of the bands, which will require a hands-on approach during marching band practice on the field, in travel, during rehearsals, and throughout the scope of the program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Handle various administrative tasks, to include managing equipment, uniforms, apparel, and supplies; contribute to strategic planning and goal setting.

- Serve as project manager and on-site event coordinator for some band events
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music from an accredited institution
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience directing a marching band.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with students, coworkers, supervisors, and the university community.
- Experience with data-tracking for quality assurance
- Knowledge of and experience with the development, implementation, and evaluation of student recruitment.
- Demonstrated understanding of factors affecting the successful matriculation, retention, and academic success of students.
- Demonstrated experience making independent professional judgments with integrity.
- Dedicated team player with experience working cooperatively with staff, students, faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders with limited direct supervision.
- Proficiency with email programs, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, document imaging systems, or knowledge databases.
- Experience interpreting data from admissions, financial aid, registration, and business office/financial management modules.
- Highly developed analytical, problem-solving, and management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Music or Music Education
