Description

As a member of the NCAA Division I and the Colonial Athletic
Association, Hofstra University places the highest priority on the overall educational experience and successful completion of academic
programs by student-athletes. The Department of Athletics provides programs and leadership for Hofstra to be a model NCAA Division I
institution in academic success, athletic excellence, and student retention. We are committed to providing holistic and inclusive academic
support to educate, champion, and empower our student-athletes.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for
Student-Athlete Academic Success, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Success Learning Specialist/Tutorial Coordinator
works collaboratively with departments across campus to provide comprehensive academic support services to all graduate and undergraduate
student-athletes in all 24 of our Division I Collegiate Athletic programs, a key component of the Pride Academic Enhancement
Program.

Candidates must be willing and able to organize and handle all aspects of administration and adhere to the rules and
regulations of Hofstra University, the Colonial Athletic Association, and the NCAA.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited
to:

  • Develops, coordinates, and implements individualized academic support plans for identified student athletes, including assessment
    and evaluation of individual student athletes to identify learning needs and additional academic support (i.e., reading comprehension,
    writing, study skills).
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates tutors within the Pride Academic Enhancement Tutorial
    program.
  • Coordinates and schedules appointment times, tracks appointment attendance, communicates session times and evaluations to
    the respective Academic Success team personnel.
  • Maintains tutoring website; records and tracks time worked by peer tutors and uses
    records to cross check tutor timesheets and complete payroll. Conducts end of semester assessment of tutoring program as a whole and of each
    individual tutor.
  • Teaches, enforces, and fosters a spirit of compliance with the University Academic integrity Honor Code for all
    tutors, and student athletes, oversees interactions of tutors and student athletes while maintaining knowledge of academic rules and
    procedures of the University as well as applicable NCAA rules regarding tutoring.
  • Works in conjunction with the Director of Student
    Access Services (Main Campus) to identify student athletes with learning needs while assisting in the process of obtaining accommodations
    where permitted.
  • Attends Athletic Department events, competitions, and tournaments, including evenings and weekends, and travels as
    assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Academic
    Success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Rehabilitation Counseling,
    Higher Education, Special Education or related field.
  • Minimum one year of work experience at the post-secondary level providing
    direct academic support to students with learning disabilities.
  • Work ethic and student-athlete advising philosophy that cultivates
    positive relationships, engages and initiates best practices in recruitment, academic success, retention and assessment, and shepherds a
    university-wide student-athlete centered collaboration.
  • The successful candidate will possess excellent human relations skills,
    ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities, perform highly detailed work, strong quantitative and analytical skills, work well
    in a fast-paced deadline driven environment, have comfort with appropriate technologies, and have a passion for working with students of
    diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teaching/presenting, and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated
    knowledge of assistive technology and its application in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach reading and writing skills,
    and experience with developing alternate learning strategies.
  • Knowledge of the demands on student-athletes matriculated in the NCAA
    Division I athletics program are essential.
  • Have a passion for and experience working with students, families, and colleagues of
    diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, and have comfort with appropriate technologies including Ellucian
    Banner, Navigate, Access Databases and Microsoft Excel, ARMS.
  • The ideal candidate will have a collaborative disposition and possess
    the ability to think both critically and strategically.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred
    in Rehabilitation Counseling, Higher Education, Special Education or related field.
  • Experience in interpreting disability related
    diagnostic testing is preferred.
