Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Learning Support will provide oversight and advocacy for all operations in the Greater University Tutoring Service (GUTS) and collaborate with learning centers across UW-Madison. GUTS is a Registered Student Organization with the goal of advancing student learning through offering free tutoring to all undergraduates. Staff, peer tutors, and students in GUTS work together through cooperative learning to foster academic, personal, and professional growth. Current programs in GUTS include Academic Match Tutoring (small group tutoring for specific courses), Drop-In Tutoring, Conversational English, World Language Learners, and Study and Learning Skills.
This position will supervise a team of undergraduate and graduate student staff that includes 3 senior coordinators, 12 coordinators, 18 paid tutors, and 60+ volunteer tutors who lead the organization’s programs. The Assistant Director will provide strategic direction for GUTS, develop partnerships with faculty/learning support staff to identify tutoring needs, facilitate coordinator/tutor training and professional development, and manage daily operations in the GUTS office and drop-in tutoring locations throughout campus.
This position reports to the Director of Learning Support in the Office of Academic & Career Success (OACS, formerly known as the Office of Undergraduate Advising). OACS is part of the Division for Teaching and Learning (DTL) along with the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring (CTLM), the Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (WISCIENCE), the Morgridge Center for Public Service, and the Student Learning Assessment (SLA) office.

Responsibilities:
Provides supplemental instruction for students enrolled in classroom, online, and/or laboratory course(s), and assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning and promote high-impact practices.
- 10% Works to develop and/or design curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction within that discipline
- 5% Assesses learner performance and may prepare reports recommending instructional improvements
- 10% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of said instructional techniques
- 5% Provides supplemental instruction for students enrolled in classroom, online, and/or laboratory courses in a variety of formats such as one-on-one sessions, group sessions, peer mentor sessions, and seminars
- 10% Meets with students for intake and general assessment and makes referrals to others on campus as appropriate
- 30% May supervise the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support
- 20% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
- 5% May participate in strategic planning and grant proposals for instructional development, new teaching methods, and program direction
- 5% Serve on the campus-wide Learning Support Committee
Tasks:
- Recruit, hire, train, and provide ongoing professional development for all GUTS undergraduate and graduate student staff (senior coordinators, coordinators, paid tutors, and volunteer tutors)
- Manage the GUTS staffing and programming budget ($350,000+) to ensure alignment with the organization’s mission/vision/values
- Partner with senior coordinators to establish and execute strategic plans and goals for Academic Match, Drop-In, Conversational English, World Language Learners, and Study and Learning Skills programs
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive learning and work environment in the GUTS office and drop-in tutoring locations
- Provide admin management for GUTS operations, including purchasing office and program supplies, updating the website and social media content, responding to phone and email inquiries, and maintaining the organization’s office in the Student Activities Center
- Build relationships with faculty and learning support staff to create and maintain strategic partnerships for GUTS programs
- Serve on the campus-wide Learning Support Committee and participate in the All Campus Tutor Development Conference (fall and spring) and All Campus Tutor Appreciation Reception (spring)

* Knowledge of instructional techniques, learning assessment methods, and tutoring models

Depending on Qualifications
The expected salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
