Promotes and supports the goals and objectives of Yale Health. Responsibilities include: In collaboration with the department manager, and with the approval of the Chief of Student Health, organizes department in a manner that ensures that the needs of the membership are met and that fosters interdependent relations with other Yale Health staff. The Associate Chief may assess and determine staffing needs, develop departmental operating systems, and evaluate departmental operations periodically. Working with Yale Health Human Resources, recruits, interviews and recommends to the Chief of Student Health clinician candidates for appointment to the clinical staff of Yale Health. Participates with the department manager in interviewing and selecting staff for administrative and clinical support positions within the department. Follows all Yale Health and University policies and procedures. Responsible for overall clinical leadership of the department and directs the activities of the departmental staff. Evaluates and counsels personnel, recommends promotions, terminations and annual merit increases for appropriate personnel within the department.
Follows all Yale Health personnel policies and procedures. Demonstrates excellence and commitment to patient care through the provision of direct medical care and consultation with providers both within and outside of the department. Directs patient care activities of department providers. Establishes standards, in consultation with the Chief of Student Health, for medical care within the specialty and assists in the development of productivity and quality assurance measures. Reviews referrals to secondary providers outside Yale Health. Serves as liaison to Yale University School of Medicine department of specialty. Works in close collaboration with the Chief of Student Health, senior or middle managers in resolving operational problems that have an impact across departments. Participates in planning for future organizational operations. Provides 24 hour on call coverage for the department, with the exception of vacation and CME, and returns all calls promptly. Arranges clinical coverage and 24 hour on call coverage for the department during vacations and CME.
Participates as a member of selected organizational committees, assists the Medical Director in special projects and represents his or her department in communications with other organizations. Maintains Population Medicine programs for high-risk patients as delineated in consultation with the Chief of Student Health. Demonstrates interest and leadership in teaching and research activities within his/her department. Reviews and comments on any proposals for teaching or research projects within feasibility, timing and involvement of staff, and forwards approved proposals to the appropriate review committees or senior managers. Informs staff of institutional policies and plans and interprets existing policy as needed. The Associate Chief also informs senior management and peers of policy and operational issues. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Associate Chief meets regularly with the Chief of Student Health, and conducts regular meetings with staff. Develops departmental budget requests in collaboration with the department manager and submits these, through the Chief of Student Health. Authorizes expenditures under approved budget and monitors use of funds monthly. Essential Duties: 1.
Defines and documents patients’ clinical problems and reaches proper diagnoses; plans and executes therapy in a timely manner; keeps records of care; provides consultation and teaching for midlevel clinicians. 2. Conducts rounds and signs out patients in a timely, thorough manner and answers calls and pages promptly. 3. Participates in hospital coverage, including: weekday and weekend on-call rotations, hospital rounds, overnight phone calls. 4. Sees patients in Acute Care in rotation. 5. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited medical school.
Required Skill/Ability 1: Demonstrated ability to implement developed standards of quality medical care and the monitoring and utilization of health services. Required Skill/Ability 2: Demonstrated clinical skills as attested by colleagues and supervisors. Required Skill/Ability 3: Ability to work as part of a team Supports staff with leadership, teaching and team building. Required Skill/Ability 4: Provides prompt input and consultation to other clinical staff as needed. Required Skill/Ability 5: Strong communication skills. Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Previous management experience, preferably in a health care system such as an HMO or IPA.
