THE SEARCH
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU or University), one of
the nation’s premier research universities, seeks a financial and business operations leader with exceptional collaboration and
leadership skills to join the Division of Student Affairs as the inaugural Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Business and
Financial Operations (AVP). Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students (VP), the AVP will serve as a key
advisor to the VP, leading the division’s financial strategy and management and business operations, overseeing a wide range of
mission-critical services, and supporting stakeholders with financial expertise to enhance campus life for students and other internal and
external constituents.
CMU is a global, research-intensive university community with more than 14,500 students, more than 110,000
alumni representing over 141 countries, and approximately 5,000 faculty and staff. In 2022, US News & World Report
ranked CMU #22 among national universities, and many of its programs are among the top-ranked in the country.
This is a critical
appointment for the division and the university, and it comes with a significant opportunity to have a tangible impact on the division and
the lives of CMU students. The AVP will lead divisional operations with auxiliary units as the focus, overseeing a portfolio that includes
Housing Services, Dining Services, Conference & Event Services, Pre-College Programs, and Finance. They will collaborate internally and
externally to identify and execute revenue generation opportunities and identify and assist with implementing operational efficiencies,
enhancements, and savings. The AVP will also be responsible for developing and implementing strategies and systems that support the growth
and impact of Student Affairs. The AVP will join an experienced leadership team of four direct reports and over 38 team members and 100
student workers within all units. The divisional budget is $100M+ with approximately $84.8M in the auxiliary units (Housing Services $48.6M,
Dining Services $27.2M, Conference and Event Services $5M, and Pre-College $4M). The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Business
and Financial Operations will be a savvy and creative financial professional, a person with exceptional collaboration and change-management
skills who excels at operational and strategic leadership, who can leverage their expertise in budget and financial planning and modeling
and apply their deeply developed analytical skills to support a student-centered mission.
