Summary
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) has an excellent opportunity for a well-qualified and high-performing candidate interested in serving as our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) and Outreach Coordinator (DEI Program Coordinator). Reporting to the Unit Administrator and CEE DEI Committee Chair, you and the DEI Committee Chair will lead strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives outlined in our DEI Roadmap with particular emphasis on programs that primarily enhance DEI for faculty (~40), students and postdoctoral research fellows (~450) and staff (~25). You will work collaboratively with CEE stakeholders as well as other institutional partners, including the College of Engineering (CoE) and UM Office of DEI.

Responsibilities*
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
30% DEI Committee Initiatives
With the DEI Committee Chair, co-lead the activities of the DEI Committee, schedule meetings, reserve rooms, coordinate catering, prepare agendas, take minutes, manage DropBox, Google Drive, M-Community email lists and prepare presentations
Interact with all DEI project teams to support progress, manage information sharing and ensure transparency of processes
Facilitate graduate student mentoring program, including identifying mentors, pairing them with incoming students, scheduling training, and soliciting feedback for continuous improvement
With the committee, identify and track metrics to measure the success of initiatives and projects
Create or gather a variety of quantitative and qualitative data from DEI-related surveys, town halls and other data sources
Summarize data in presentation formats for various audiences
30% DEI Administration
Update event information in shared files, including what went well and what could have gone better for continuous improvement
Plan for events and hosting, particularly for the grad student peer mentoring program, the Pelham Scholars Program and the DEI Committee – catering, room reservations, invitations, flyers, post-event surveys, setup/clean up and receipt management
Support Pelham engagement and programming for meetings, industry mentor/mentee pairs, etc.
Respond to Canvas submissions for the CEE+DEI Certificate, including verifying and recognizing successful completions
Oversee student temp workers who assist with DEI projects
25% Community Building in CEE
Identify DEI training, workshops, and events happening outside of CEE and notify CEE about these opportunities for conversations and skill-building
Draft DEI messages for the monthly dept communication (InBox Insider)
Support the engagement of prospective and new students by leading an information session as part of grad recruiting Visit Day (March) and Orientation (August)
Collaborate with and support student groups and interest or identity-related clubs on DEI themed activities (MANRRS, NSBE, SHPE)
10% Outreach
Prepare presentations, reports, emails and other communication materials (i.e., newsletters, brochures, manuals, promotional information, etc.) related to DEI initiatives, coordinating with the CEE Marketing Specialist
Coordinate with Marketing Specialist regarding updates to CEE, DEI or Strategic Planning websites using project management principles to identify, track and complete tasks in a timely manner
Coordinating with the Marketing Specialist to create, review, and maintain web pages regularly
Coordinate with Marketing Specialist to use social media (Instagram, Twitter, etc.) and make recommendations for enhanced social media strategy
Participate in DEI focused recruitment and retention efforts outside traditional recruiting events (e.g., HBCUs, MSIs, etc.)
Partner with other schools and colleges on campus to keep up with current events and common issues related to developing, supporting and retaining under-represented groups
Identify and schedule/promote DEI workshops for members of the CEE community offered by Rackham, Organizational Learning, College of Engineering and other university units
5% Leadership
Participate in staff development training sessions, faculty/staff meetings, and other venues for learning and sharing information
Collaborate and network with the CoE Office of Culture, Community and Equity (OCCE) and other academic departments to share resources, build partnerships and enhance our DEI impact
Build rapport with students, faculty, staff, and prospective students; gain the trust of faculty
Meet with CEE members as needed to hear concerns and suggestions
Utilize project management principles and practices consistently to stay organized and on-task while juggling multiple priorities and diverse stakeholders
Follow all university, college and department policies and procedures, including stewardship of resources (Human, IT, Financial, Physical)
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor’s degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
4+ years of progressively responsible experience in related positions, preferably in educational settings
Training in, or experience with, critical race theory, anti-racism, gender and LGBTQ+ issues, and restorative justice principles
Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment as well as work independently with minimal supervision
Demonstrated proficiency with information technology applications including MS-Office and Google collaboration tools (spreadsheets, word processing, calendars), social media, DropBox and web management (Word Press)
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the English language
Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to understand a variety of viewpoints and foster opportunities in a multicultural and collaborative environment
Proven organizational skills and initiative, particularly related to managing projects/events
Be able to set priorities and handle multiple assignments and deadlines
Learn quickly and stay calm in the face of concurrent tasks with competing deadlines
Display excellent judgment while operating in a flexible and highly professional manner
Ability and willingness to adjust hours to work early mornings, evenings or weekends in person
Prefer experience in a higher education setting working with and/or mentoring graduate students
International experience and second language preferred
Work Locations
This position is Monday – Friday from 8am to 5pm with occasional evenings or weekends, such as for events. CEE operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. The role will be classified as a FLEX position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means typically working on campus an average of 3 days per week during the academic year and 2 days per week from mid-May to mid-August.
