Position Summary

The
Ceramics Lab Technician works under the supervision of the Art Instructional Technician III, to provide logistical support for the Ceramics
area facilities, faculty and students. Support duties include: operate and maintain specialized equipment; order, receive, store and
inventory materials, supplies and equipment; perform related support duties for annual events, visiting artists and community outreach.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime compensation under the Fair Labor Standards Act).

Anticipated Hiring Range: $20.57 per hour – $25.00 per hour (hourly-intermittent)

Salary Grade/Range: 1

Recruitment Type: Temporary/renewable. Reappointment is contingent on funding, work performance, and recommendation
of the supervisor.

Time Base: Hourly intermittent

Work Hours: To be determined, variable
and on-call; evening and weekend shifts may be assigned. Typically scheduled up to approximately 15-20 hours per week. Hours not typically
assigned during June through Mid-August. Hourly-intermittent employees in CSUEU-represented classifications are limited to 1000 hours per
fiscal year.

Department Information

The Department of Art introduces students to the expressive world of
the visual arts. Students are able to explore art through courses in art education, art history, ceramics, drawing, new media art, painting,
printmaking, and interdisciplinary sculpture.

The Department’s undergraduate program offers courses in four general areas Art
History, Studio Arts Methods, and Art Studio, while the fourth prepares students to teach with a Master of Arts degree in Studio
Art.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of principles of providing support services; knowledge
of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline; knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment and their
uses related to the discipline. Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used; ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs on
scientific equipment; ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results; ability to plan activities and
prepare schedules; ability to use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials. and
Experience: Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student
assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline. or Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in
courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be
substituted for one year of the required experience. or Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving
extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.
Required
Qualifications

Required: 1. Experience loading, firing ceramics kilns, experience mixing clays, glazes, slips and englobes.
2. Advanced Knowledge of Ceramics, and the related processes. 3. Experience in operating and knowledge in maintaining all related ceramics
equipment in the lab, including but not limited to: kick wheels, electric wheels, grinders, clay mixer, pug mill, slab roller, electric
kiln, gas kiln, wood-fueled kiln, pallet jack. 4. Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets, and the ability to determine hazardous aspects of
related materials; and to safely acquire, work with, store and dispose of these materials. 5. Ability to manage and oversee a safe and
inclusive lab/studio environment for a diverse population of students. 6. Ability to operate forklift, delivery truck or van, and maintain
an excellent driving record. 7. Ability to operate a computer for tasks including: email, material and equipment research, purchasing and
recordkeeping, financial account maintenance. 8. Excellent interpersonal skills. 9. Ability to plan, organize and follow a weekly schedule.
10. Ability to project and respond to needs for equipment and materials for each class.
Preferred Qualifications
11. Education level of MFA in Ceramics. 12. Work experience in a ceramics lab or studio. 13. Experience training others on kiln operation,
clay and glaze mixing; including proper use of safety guidelines for related processes. 14. Work experience in HAZMAT handling. 15. Work
experience in purchasing and managing inventory. 16. Advanced-level experience in firing various type of kilns, including wood-fueled
kilns.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Possession of a driver’s license and maintenance of good driving record.
