Buffalo, New York, Buffalo, New York – Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (JSMBS) seeks an accomplished and collaborative physician leader with a record of significant contributions in academic medicine to serve as its next Chair of Medicine. Reporting to Allison Brashear, M. D. , the Dean of JSMBS and Vice President for Health Sciences, the Chair will have the opportunity to advance the department across all mission areas, broaden its impact on the health of the communities throughout Western New York, and to build upon the college’s national and international impact in education and research. The incoming Chair will also serve as the Chair of UBMD Internal Medicine, which provides oversight for the administration, planning and marketing for the practice plan. JSMBS is one of six schools at the University of Buffalo (UB) that sits within the Academic Health Center (AHC). In addition to JSMBS, the AHC is comprised of the school of Dental Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Public Health and Health Professions and Social Work. Together, they offer leading-edge clinical, research and educational programs. For clinical practice, the AHC offers a unique consortium of affiliated teaching hospitals and health care systems to provide a wide range of clinical experience and training opportunities to faculty, staff and students. The consortium includes: Kaleida Health System , Erie County Medical Center , Great Lakes Health System of Western New York , VA Western New York Healthcare System , Catholic Health System and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center .
With a strong focus on research and education, the department aims to elevate the national and regional reputation of JSMBS. As the college’s largest clinical department, the Department of Medicine is comprised of thirteen divisions and more than 140 faculty members and has a rich history of excellence in clinical care, research and education. In 2022, the department achieved notable success, with extramural funding of more than $23 million in internal medicine. As part of the comprehensive AHC, the department collaborates extensively across JSMBS, centers of excellence, affiliated teaching hospitals, and the UB, promoting interdisciplinary and interdepartmental initiatives. The department also hosts highly competitive residency programs and fellowships, offering exceptional training opportunities for medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff. Leading the Department of Medicine, the next Chair will be a nationally-recognized physician leader and scholar in medicine, with a proven commitment to clinical care, medical education, provider training, and research, with experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion and value-based care. They will have the knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians, researchers, and educators while embracing the values of quality and financial sustainability. The successful candidate will bring a strong track record of leadership and successful mentorship of diverse faculty at all stages of career development along with a demonstrated understanding of sponsored research and a desire to expand the research portfolio of the Department. Candidates must have the leadership experience required to oversee a complex, multi-site and very busy clinical department across the UBMD Internal Medicine practice plan. D. or equivalent degree and board certification in a field of internal medicine within the Department’s scope, and warrant qualification for appointment to Professor at JSMBS.
